Coming here the first time gps took me through the freeway. It was a month & a half later that I drove back & it took me through the 'old' way. Why? I don't know but outside of the boring parts it was really easy driving & I saw a lot of interesting areas that I missed the first time. So I missed most of the Denver traffic & saw some cool areas.

Back home it would sometimes take me around a block & then get me back to the road I was on in the first place. Never did understand that one either. But, in all fairness, it's usually pretty good & has been extremely helpful finding things in this new, to me, area.

How did you miss most of the Denver traffic? What is the "old way"? I'm asking because I'm supposed to go through Denver on my road trip and I really don't want to get into the thick of it, if I don't have to. I'm into seeing "cool areas" rather than boring freeways and traffic.

I will actually have a GPS on this trip now that I think of it. Everyone knows I have a cell phone...in a Zip Lock bag in drawer. lol I only use it for road trips so I can call AAA or 911 if necessary. It has a GPS app.. I also have the internet on it but am taking a tablet this trip so won't need it for that.

When Dee visited me she used hers to get us around town for yard sales and it worked well. As long as I've lived here there are a lot of streets I've never heard of, especially on the south (newest) end of town. So I was glad she had it.

AZ, I can't remember. It's been almost a year. I thought I was going the same way I had the first time but realized I wasn't when nothing was familiar & there was very little traffic. I will try to remember & get back to you if I do.

I have learned that there are several ways to get someplace, and you would need to input it into the GPS. Such as: fastest route, shortest route, use of freeways route, no using freeways way and the like. So be sure you input the way you want to reach your destination.

I also don't always follow the verbal directions if I know where I am going to to a point. After I reach the point where I know where I am, I will then follow verbal directions. The system will re-route itself if you take a different way than what it has told you to take.

Thanks! I would appreciate it. I really hate driving through 'big cities' so try to find go arounds. I know I'll never drive through Sacramento again! lol

When I first came to Colorado to visit family I made the mistake of driving I70 through Denver at 4pm. NEVER again. And my trusty gps just before the Eisenhower Tunnel screamed turn left NOW! Which would have put me in the middle of the Colorado River. After several minutes of that stupid thing yelling turn left NOW! I unplugged it, miles later plugged it back it only to hear turn around NOW! Maybe someone found it around Rifle...where I threw it out the window.

I'm thinking it may have been the Santa Fe Trail. I vaguely remember seeing that. I was coming from Minnesota to Arizona. Went through North & South Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado, New Mexico & finally Arizona. At some point I intersected with the freeway again to go to Las Vegas, New Mexico where I stayed the night before finally arriving in Arizona. I'd also stayed in South Dakota.

I now wish I had done a travelogue but...

I am a dinosaur; have never had a GPS. Got my trusty road atlas when we travel; I joke with my wife that our GPS is me. And with the internet, it makes planning even better. We are making a trip to a concert in a part of Virginia that I have not been in years. Using Google Earth, I have already "driven" from the interstate through the nearby small town, to the cabin we are renting and then to the concert venue. I even know exactly where the local restaurants are for breakfast and dinner (and what they look like).
