Although Charlotte is the closest BIG airport, we have used the Asheville airport many times and love it. We've flown cross country with only one stop in Dallas, and price was not bad. Worth the convenience. It is very user friendly, clean, modern, and low key---they even have rocking chairs all over for a calm and peaceful environment. I HATE HATE HATE flying, so it is a dream airport for me.
Also I've heard that the Greenville, SC airport is really good and only 1 hour away.
I don't want to argue with people but I have two house in North Carolina, one two hours from the beach and the other at the beach. There are a variety of options within or adjacent to each of the areas. Humidity etc is in the skin of the beholder. I believe the OP is currently in up state NY so yes the Carolina's are more humid but only they can tell if it is to humid.
Full of retired Marines thanks to the close proximity of Cherry Point. Nothing wrong with that, just an observation. Lived there 60 years ago before we got quarters on the air station. Back again 12-13 years later. Love the area. Watch out for the rip tides.

Wouldn't say I know a lot about but obviously live closer to than most. Is within what I would call a living sphere of experience. People like it and it is well spoken of and as said a good retirement destination for some. Water communty and not all that far from Morehead City and the beaches there. Have been to a few years ago. I know they had one awesome Italian restuarant.
Hi. My husband and I are looking to retire. We all but moved to Lake Mary Florida and after much research, we found that we probably could not stand the extreme heat and humidity. Now we are looking at the Carolinas. We are both in our early 50's, and active. We are looking for a nice community in a smaller town but not to rural. We want shopping and dining within minutes. We love the ocean so living 30 minutes or so from the ocean would be great. Not too keen on living coastal due to hurricanes and tornadoes. We want a single family home in a quiet neighborhood and not in the midst of the tourists. A gated community would be nice. We are looking to spend between 300,000 and 400,000. Any input would be greatly appreciated. I feel like I'm looking for a needle in a haystack since I know nothing about the Carolinas. Also, we want a low crime area. My adult daughter lives in Raleigh but not sure that's for me. Want to be closer to the ocean! Thanks for your time.
Did you ever think about buying two places within 2-4 hours or so of each other? How close do you want to be to your daughter?
