Trying to figure out these Gen Y young people, born between 1980-1995...there's something like 80 million of 'em and all they seem to be doing is texting, tweeting...and taking pictures with their Smart Phones...or getting more tattoos.
Who are these "kids"--I'm wanting to understand. What makes them tick??
The same as all previous generations. Each has had its fads, "crazy" music, impossible and usually unsustainable styles that have ebbed and flowed through and around succeeding generations to their amusement or consternation and the "horror" of their parents. This, too, shall pass as the penduluum continues its inexorable swing from side-to-side.
They grew up with technology available 24/7. It's a big part of their lives.
Things like cell phones, laptops, mobile connectivity at your fingertips have always been there for them. To them, being connected via the internet is what hanging around with your friends are to us older folks. Online is their social avenue.
Not that it's bad; it's just different than how we grew up.

Nothing in your original post indicated you had any dislike/hate for Gen Y. What does confuse me is why some posters can't wait to jump to conclusions and pounce instead of asking for clarification if/when they are confused by the meaning of what a person writes.
I want to understand this younger generation so I can have a meeting of the minds...I hate being out of the loop and not being able to converse and understand the people who make up a large part of my/our universe.
As I don't have children or grand kids in that age group, I do feel somewhat at sea in understanding the life experiences that shape them, what they're thinking/feeling. Who are they? I want to "grok" them, if anyone's familiar with that term.
I only see this age group in public places texting, keyboarding on their lap tops, and/or talking into Blue Tooth earpieces or on their ever smaller cell phones--and I don't yet "get" them.
I've been tempted to: Would it be uncool to stop a stranger and ask, "Who are you, what concerns you--I want to get to know you"--and fear I'd be turned in as a loony...
Happy Texan above, shed some illumination, that makes sense...as a Boomer, I am the TV generation, they are the tech generation?
Figured some of us might have kids/grand kids in this age group--there's no Gen Y thread on CD that I've seen?
