Just wanted to share some stories from the NYT of remarkable ordinary people, who passed this year (2011) and who followed their dreams no matter how modest or grand. Maybe their lives will inspire us to follow our dreams in 2012. There are a few sad stories mixed in, and these too might remind us to seize the day.

Looks interesting, but not for us stuck on 'pay-By_the_byte_dialup' (after a long wait / hung system, all I see is a few random pics).

I wish they would warn us when we poke a site that will hose our connection for the rest of the \day. Gonna have to move to town, or a blue state, they won't 'connect' us rural folks. Our vote is meaningless, when they can nab a zillion friends on facebook in a few minutes.

Possibilities, but way too many photographs to upload. After 7 minutes I lost interest and closed out...I gather the idea is doing what you want as you enter retirement and damn the torpedoes?
My idea of making the most of life! What else should we do with our lives after working for 30+ years? Finally take the time to enjoy our dreams...

262 stories! My computer loaded the 262 pictures fairly quickly, and I read three of the stories. The OP's description seems accurate. Good reading for a lazy day, perhaps a dozen at a time.

, You must have HS, and probably even cell reception from your HOME (instead of hiking to the nearest mtn (not covered in trees).

I will try this site next time I am stuck at an airport with free WiFi.

I will bravely follow my dream, that someday Rural USA will be connected as well as some remote foreign countries I lived in back in the 1990's (probably funded by, and using USA technology ...).

Bravery, Hope ... lots of us dream of being fulfilled and useful. Some for being hermits and self absorbed. Big world & temporarily room for all (but not all are allowed these dreams. A shame). No wonder there is so much "restlessness' amongst the natives. WE (USA) and developed countries are truly availed MANY options, but I'm not sure we are happier (or of more value to society) for it. I would like to read some 'retirement' dreams from lesser nations.

I think people should try their dreams when they have them, not waiting for retirement. But always be ready to accept that you might bang your head on the wall, have costs you couldn't imagine, and find out what your dream is and what it isn't.
Probably best done well before retirement! But then, I'm fresh out of dreams here and now.

I don't know why, but I couldn't get enough of it. I must've opened 25 stories and just gazed at the photos, wondering about that person who had lived on earth and is now no longer here. I'm fascinated by the little vignettes written up by others, on their mothers and fathers, sisters, brothers, etc. It makes me realize how short life is, yes, but what amazing things ordinary people do within the big or small dream that they went after, while on earth. It's making me think over my own life in a positive way.

Most of the people profiled went after their dream, big or small, well before retirement. I think the stories, for me, made me realize that in retirement years dreams can still grow, or change...they can be renewed, or reaffirmed especially when one realizes (for the upteenth time ) that life is fleeting.

Just open a few stories randomly, based on what thumbnail photos draw you. You might get carried away for a few minutes, like I did...
