I'm stating the age of "60 Plus" b/c I didn't take as much as I do now at almost 63 yrs old! In fact, before I met my wife in 2000, I wasn't taking anything! Now I take a daily high potiency vitamin, fish oil, a suppliment for my bones/cartilage, bp and cholesterol med, a med for Diabetes and a allergy med. Don't know how long the bp and cholesterol med will go since doctor just put me on them early last month (very low dosage). My wife (64), takes the same vitamin and fish oil, but 2 different otc's for older females.

Do you take anything for "age related" health and well being? Was there a time in your life that you didn't take anything? Does you doctor suggest you take something and you say "no" to yourself. Do you say to yourself "I'm taking enough as it is!"

Actually, I was told by a doctor a couple of years ago "that vitamin you're taking is worthless. Just eat right." I looked at him and said "and what if I don't want to necessarily eat right, then the vitamin takes over, right?" He wouldn't answer me and left the office. I didn't pursue an answer.
The doctor I have now compliments me on the vitamin and suppliments I take.

The "rule" I follow is to follow the advice of my primary care physician. He knows what medicatons I'm taking for serious, and not so, health issues and which supplements interfere with that treatment. If I didn't have confidence in his advice I'd find someone in whom I did.

I believe too many people are self-medicating. Too many don't regularly see their physician, or even have a doctor they regularly see. And if they do they don't tell their doctor everything they're doing and taking.

Many of the supplements are worthless. Some can cause harm. Too many people take these things as the result of sitting in front of the TV watching commercials, or by reading e-mail messages. Chain letters. Advertising on the internet.

A sound, balanced diet is important. Exercise is important. But I do take a daily mega vitamin my physician has approved because I don't always do the "good things" I should be doing and I believe the supplements will help to balance things out.

One example: I was taking a high-quality cod liver oil for Omega-3, etc., to assist with heart issues. My cardiologist complimented me on what I was doing. But she suggested two relatively small portons of salmon eaten weekly would provide so much more of the good things than the spoonfuls of cod liver oil and the fish was fresh and had other values as well. So that's what I do. That's the "balanced diet" discussion we have.

Anyhow, fewer pills and more natural substances is better.

My VA doctor knows everything I take. She put me on the bp and cholesterol med for a month cause they were a little higher than she liked. She also mentioned that many folks our age take a low-dose baby aspirin daily......haven't started that one yet. Anyway, we eat "ok", but could eat better. Like to have a few Bud Lights or a margarita once in a while.......and doctor knows that as well. I stopped smoking (never a heavy smoker at all) when I met my wife and stopped chewing/dipping in 2006. Due to the popularity of our little fitness center and early winter darkness, we don't get nearly the amount of exercise that we do in the Spring/Summer months.

I take vitamins and an aspirin every day. I do regular aspirin because it doesn't bother me at all, stomach wise. I think almost everyone should consider this because to get everything we need, we would have to overeat.

I don't take any prescription meds at all and I plan to keep it that way as long as possible.

Went to the VA Clinic today for a little lab work (routine) and see my doctor's nurse. She took my bp and it was 104/71 and she looked at me and said "very good", compared to what it was last month when I seen her. Guess the 1/2 bp med a day is working. It's only 5mg (1/2), but it's working! A year ago, my VA doctor recommended that I take that med for "a little to high of bp" she said and I said "naw, not right now". Now I'm glad I'm taking it!

We can't wait for the Spring/Summer to get here to get more exercise! Oh yes, get the old power boat on the water and shoot at some targets at the Range and drop a few pounds.

I'm 69 and take no meds, no vitamins, etc.. I do eat well though...nothing processed, no lunchmeat, hot dogs, no TV dinners or crap like that. No desserts, nothing with high sodium and preservatives. Nearly everything fresh, not much meat but plenty of chicken and fish. I like pork too but rarely have that either. I skip a LOT of aisles in the grocery store!

My BP and cholesteral are good and I have tons of energy. I can't imagine having to take a handful of pills every day. That could change someday but, hopefully, not anytime soon! My mom, at 84, takes a cholesterol pill, a BP pill and a blood thinner. Not bad for her age!

I take a multi-vitamin, calcium, fish oil and aspirin as well as my BP and statin prescriptions. But I just finished a book, " The end of Illness" by David B. Agus, MD. He's a cancer specialist who takes a systemic approach to health. He thinks we're coming to a time when we can prevent most illness. He's all for statins and aspirin because they reduce inflamation, but is against most vitamins and supplements. He says studies have shown them to be ineffective and perhaps mildly detrimental. You get all kinds of micro-nutrients when you eat a good diet that aren't included in the pills. He says the best thing you can do for your health is get your annual flu shot. A bout of flu can cause inflammation that can have repercussions years later. You should keep to a regular schedule, minimize stress, eat well and exercise at the same time each day.

My eye Dr (had cataract surgery, didn't even know I had them) has me taking 3 Thera Tears oil
caps, 2 Eye caps, I lutein daily. They are fish oils and Vit A.
Another Dr has me taking Citrical caps for bone health. I'm 65, had a bone density test which was
fine, no osteoporosis. She says I still could get it though.
I take regular senior type vitamins, also C1000, B100, a lot of various other ones I have but usually
don't remember to take all of them daily...
Also take 3 prescriptions, 2 are blood pressure, 1 is a diuretic...
