Interesting thread MMoB. I too wonder why more people don't consider the Las Vegas metro area for retirement. People talk about the heat, and it is hot for a couple of months. However, I can still golf in the morning during July and August, and at any time of the day for the remaining 10 months. And as for the rest of my life in Henderson -- it would be hard to differentiate it from any other desert SW community. We tend our gardens; we volunteer; we go to our local library; we enjoy local shopping and farmer's markets; we go to art fairs, plays, symphony concerts; we go to church... C'mon people, let go of your preconceptions and listen to people like MMoB who has found a perfect place to retire. Me too!

See, this is why I love this forum. A topic like this comes up, and before you know it we hear from a regular who happens to have retired in the area. Always good to hear comments from someone who has actually walked the walk. Indeed, LV is one of those cities people make presumptions about without actually knowing what it's like to live there. Good to hear from one of the locals.
By the way, I'd love to see photos from everyday life in Henderson, as well as more photos from Las Vegas. I'd love to see a typical garden in your community, the farmers market, people at a community fair, golfers in July, whatever you might have.
Tek_Freek, the psychological makeup, intent, and personalities of people is open to interpretation. You have your interpretations and I have mine of madmanofbethesda.
Perception and interpretation can be based on knowledge or based on values or based on strongly held beliefs or other things. Your life experience and beliefs, Tek_Freek, are not allowing you to incorporate or consider my perceptions.
But that's okay. You, of course, are secure in what you believe, what you perceive, and it is certainly your right.
(and to Caladium - so far, this isn't a thread about a variety of places to live - it is a thread mostly about Las Vegas and surrounding Las Vegas - as outlined by madmanofbethesda who started the thread)
But yours are allowing you to incorporate or consider MMOBs perceptions? All the big words don't hide the fact that you are talking out of both sides of your mouth.
madmanofbethesda is looking for positive comments to validate his choice of retiring in Las Vegas, as he is questioning the wisdom of his choice and whether his choice could be a mistake. (but I doubt he would ever admit that he has some doubt and questions about his choice) And he is also looking to elicit negative comments to add to his thinking about Las Vegas.
That is my interpretation.
I've been to Las Vegas and have made my assessments. If madmanofbethesda thinks it is a paradise of sorts or even just merely enjoyable, more power to him.

Sorry, I have a new laptop and haven't learned how to transfer photos from my camera to the computer yet! I have roses, Mexican Bird of Paradise, sage trees, lilies, iris, cactus, succulents, honeysuckle, pineapple guava, chase, bottlebrush, cyprus, crate myrtle, rosemary shrubs plus several others that I've yet to identify. The garden was well-established when I bought my house -- good irrigation system installed -- and what most would term desert landscaping. We have quail and hummingbirds aplenty and no mosquitoes. I sit out on my patio in the morning and evening and love my view of the garden and the mountains in the distance. It's a good place to be.
Since when is good, informative posting considered proof of doubt and lack of certainty?
I totally agree. I'm not completely sure where we'll retire, but wherever it is I've already decided I'm going to be post one of those daily photo journals. You've seen them: a photo a day showing a slice of life. Lots will be of my new community, others will show something I did or saw that day. A record of what the first year of retirement is like. Would posting those photos be proof that I need to convince myself that I wanted to retire? Of course not Same goes for the photos in this thread; they aren't some sort of proof of uncertainty, they're about discovery and sharing data.
Having noted that, I also want to ask: Even if the OP had been posting this thread as part of his decision making process-- so what? Seriously, why sneer at someone for that? What's wrong with having uncertainty about where you want to retire? Many people come to this forum for just that reason. In fact, the more I think about it the more I think posting a few photos might actually be a smart way to come to a decision (and interesting for the rest of us, too).

I don't read his post that way at all. FWIW - my husband and I have only been to Las Vegas twice. Last time (a fair number of years ago) - we spent a couple of days hiking - at Red Rocks among other places (we don't gamble and we didn't bring our golf clubs).
The Strip is what it is. One good point is that there are a lot of good restaurants there. One bad point is that the average tourists we saw were total slobs (doesn't make Las Vegas unique - you see the same thing everywhere from Disneyworld to New York).
We drove around some higher end golf course communities - and they looked fine to me (assuming one likes the "desert look").
FWIW - we never considered Las Vegas as a place to move because we don't like the desert. OTOH - my youngest brother (who isn't retired) lives in Scottsdale and he loves the desert.
BTW - what parts of Las Vegas did you think were ugly? I suspect there are some not-so-great parts of town (what place doesn't have those?) - but we didn't go out of our way to find them. Robyn

I can only conclude that there is some history between the two that causes Matisse12 to make comments like "madmanofbethesda is looking for positive comments to validate his choice of retiring in Las Vegas, as he is questioning the wisdom of his choice and whether his choice could be a mistake." Seriously, are you a wanna be psych major or something?
How can you possibly "know" this?
Matisse12, after reading what you have posted here I will take anything I see that is written by you with a very larger grain of salt. That assumes I'll even bother to read it. You have to have some ulterior motive going on in the background.
In our visits to LV we have been to Red Rock, Lake Mead (the dam), and Valley of Fire. Years ago we began renting cars so we could get away from the Strip and do other things locally, like Trivia at McMullans on Tuesdays, and get to the casinos away from the Strip.
The next visit will include at least one trip to the lake for things other than the dam, and a trip to St. George to visit friends we made on our last cruise. We didn't realize Bryce canyon was so close so we might stay over at St. George and make a trip there, too.
I, for one, appreciate the information.
