What a load of B.S. There is no reason why people cannot continue to contribute. Since you are a male, Stealth Rabbit, why don't you explain to me why people cannot contribute just because the word "Men" has been added to the thread title? I know it bugged the hell out of some women, but that too is completely inexplicable. Those consumed with hatred, whether it be of a gender, a race, an age group, a religious affiliation, or a nationality, have no place in City-Data and should look for a forum where their biased views and the concomitant bashing are considered acceptable.

There comes a point where I cannot hold myself back from standing up for common decency; I just don't care anymore how viciously I get slammed for it. Let the haters go on the attack once again, as there are worse things than undergoing the name calling. Acquiescing in the bigotry would be worse.

You are several steps ahead of many of us! We are keeping our eyes on your profile LOCATION: Portland... Lets get that updated in due time! Looking forward to your safe arrival. Ohio won't work for me... I had a couple business trips there in the 1980s. The food at the diners was so good (home cooked style) I would be a blimp in no time!

We Wish you all the best as you leave the west. It is certainly not the west you came to... but Ohio has improved a lot while you were gone in OREGON. I hear Ohio is the Mid-west

Nice rant, ER. I applaude your efforts and commisserate with you on the attacks on CD. Having been recently obliterated by a majority of posters on another( Phoenix) thread, I am hesitant to express my opinions anywhere ! Ahh, such is life.

I always like it when people return to various threads and give updates. After I arrive in my new city and hookup with a new ISP I will change my location in my profile to Cleveland Heights so you will know I am there. It might take a little while but I promise I will keep you posted.

If I remember correctly (and I don't always), the change to "women and men" on this thread started when someone, either a poster or a mod, intimated that perhaps this thread shouldn't be a sticky. Apparently only 2 threads can be stickies. Chat has always been one. When an avid poster of photographs flooded the Retirement forum, I and a few others suggested cleaning that up by making a sticky of retiree artwork and photographs, but that meant that this thread I'm posting on right now was going to be taken off sticky status – or Chat would be. Chat survived, and this one didn't, as a sticky.

From there, several including myself thought there could be a NEW thread like this one, welcoming men and specifying "men and women" in the title. But instead of a new thread, this thread title alone got changed to include men. Soon thereafter the "artwork and photo" sticky got un-stickied and "Men and Women Retiring Alone" became a sticky once again, perhaps in response to private messages to the mod(s).

I see no reason why any thread has to be gender-specific, though there's a great deal of sentiment surrounding the origins of this thread. That said, I also see that women retiring alone and moving alone have a whole set of gender-specific issues that would make it worthwhile to preserve the original thread.

The problem, imho, is the restriction to two stickies, which seems arbitrary. There could easily be three, one for women, one for men, and of course good old Chat.

I never had the impression that those women who opposed the addition of “men” in the title of this thread were consumed with hatred (of men). This has been mentioned numerous times, men and women who retire alone have very different issues to consider in terms of retiring/relocating. Changing the name of this thread shifted that focus. That was the issue.

Thank you both for your civility, which I deeply appreciate. Since the original arguments about the name change of the thread were quickly taken down by the management here because they violated the TOS (rules), I cannot go back and cite them in support of my position. At the time it did not occur to me to take screenshots or otherwise make copies; even if I had, how could I post them now, since they were violations of the TOS at the time and still would be? (In other words, I would be in violation for posting those old posts). I assure you those original comments were anything but civil. Let me hasten to add that not every single person who participated in that discussion was uncivil. But some were really outrageous. I stand behind my position.

I'm sure I still have copies. Nevertheless, sometimes you have to "let go" and move on.

I agree with the wisdom of that sentiment, and in fact it was my stance. However, when a poster brought up the matter in very inaccurate summary, I could not resist responding. I applaud your civility as well.

I, too, saw the original posts and agree with the above. However as lenora stated, it's best to let it go. I continue to enjoy reading all the posts under this thread.
