There was a post I responded to about a woman who moved to Ashville, NC. It intrigued me also so I signed up for the electronic newspaper to see if I would like it. Want to make sure I find the right place. I need to be able to live on $1259 month, actually 1159 since they automatically take out for medicare. I'm saving a lot now as I am staying with my sister and just sharing house expenses. So I should have plenty to investigate both places before I choose and I do have a healthy savings account because I was paid 2 years back pay & the only expensive thing I bought was a decent car.

I just checked temperatures: Fergus Falls, MN 12 , Knoxville, TN 43 and Asheville, NC 47 - so those two are something I'll really have to look at.

Knoxville and Asheville are both very nice,
I prefer to be closer to the Mtns (which are near to each)
Less tornado risk, more air movement, and cooler.

Have you checked out ?

thank you very much. I bookmarked them both to review later. Staying up way too late tonight but that's the way it is sometimes.

I stumbled on a town I plan on going back to, so I can really check it out.
Salem, Virginia. Close to Roanoke, the Blue Ridge, yet not so far from DC or even friends & family up and down the eastern states. Such a pretty town it seemed. Not too big, but not too small. Hehehe.... just right!

For those of you looking for your retirement Nirvana on a very limited budget, here is a check list.
1. Transportation; bus service and bus stop in walking distance?
Is other transit available for elderly and disabled?
2.Cost of living Index; subsidy's for seniors? Utility prices? Property taxes? Is SS or pensions taxed? $food? $rent? Mortgage? Vehicle Registration costs. Regional taxes, how much?
3. Senior support services; medical, home aids, grocery deliveries available?
4. Entertainment; senior social networking: church, grange, clubs, senior centers, community playhouses.
5. Geographical; How's the weather? Family nearby? Does the area hold interest for you? Are the activities you love available in this area?
Please feel free to add to this list.

We stumbled upon the same town not so long ago on our way down to Abingdon. Really liked the old-fashioned downtown, lovely college campus and welcoming public library. I'm not so sure they always get mild winters, though. Something to track.
