I live in a small 1956 cbs home in deep south Miami-Dade. My property taxes are $1300. My homeowners insurance is $3200 and sure to go up. I cannot afford to live down here upon retirement.
Popcorn - I 've been considering moving to FL because of the outrageous taxes in NJ and was surprised by the cost of your homeowner's insurance. Is that the norm? Do you know if insurance would be that high in a townhouse or condo? Thanks!
I don't know what the cost would be in a townhouse or condo, sorry. I live about 12 miles inland, people living on the coast may pay lots more. There are parts of Florida with lower homeowners insurance - central and northern Florida.
Just checking-in although I haven't posted in a while. My relocation dream for somewhere tropical is still just a "dream" ~~ blame the economy. My property has devalued to half of what I actually paid for it and I'm not yet ready to take that much loss. Let's see how I survive another cold, bleak, damp Oregon winter....

Don't say that "w" word Summer is going by too fast. After next week I'll be back to a crazy schedule-work--accounting class--technical writing class--swim class--ceramic class. I will probably disappear again until the holiday break.
Sometimes I miss the NW but you reminded me what I didn't like. damp, gray winters.

NEG...... I have thought of renting out the house, but I have a beautiful home and hesitate to trust renters who would not have the same respect for it, as I do and then there's "Jack" the rambunctious Rat Terrier. I am considering going to Florida (or California) for a couple of weeks during the winter when I just can't stand it anymore and I can board Jack for that time span

Same issues here (300 miles north)
I take several 'sun break' trips. I prefer CA as it is close (don't waste a day getting there via plane) and CHEAP. $39 to SMF. You have some great fares out of Medford on Allegant(?).
I also do CO, AZ, and NM for winter sun
I get a rental car for $10 / day and stay in private guest homes ($10/day including a meal... evergreenclub or equivalent).
One yr I based my small motorhome (van) in SW USA and flew back and forth to visit the many deserts / wildflower places. Very cheap rates from LV, PHX, El Paso ... (Cheaper to travel than to stay home since my property taxes are so high....) but I don't have to board my dog. neighbors can check in on him every few days. He is not leashed or penned up... Someone has to watch the house, and this is how he earns his keep.
