I used the same tools as you, frazl. In addition, once I zeroed in on a particular neighborhood, I used Google Streetview to see the details of the area.
Riverbird, are you still thinking of relocating or are you settled for good?(remind us where!)
I relocated last August, moving back to the midwestern state where I'm from. Although I like visiting there, I've found I can't live there. I'm hunkered down for the winter now, planning to move and put my place on the market in early April, either to Portland or back to the Bay Area. Thanks for asking.
Thanks for sharing your experience in moving back to where you came from. I have wrestled with that question for quite awhile and I have come to the same conclusion...I probably couldn't. At least unless I really had to. Hope you're bearing up with these winter storms!
I'm considering southern Utah now. I'm looking for four seasons, not beastly hot like where I now live, not too much snow, and just beautiful country. I hope to visit the state soon.
St. George seems to be a little too hot. I've been looking at Wayne and Kane counties, maybe Bicknell and Torrey in Wayne and near Kanab in Kane. I'm kind of looking at the area around Cedar City too (Iron County). Actually, the St. George area air quality is not good plus it's getting way too populated. I've got to be sure wherever I move, it won't be overrun with people in my lifetime. Until I visit the beautiful area, I'm just not sure.
You're going to want upper elevations in Southern Utah. Pretty much just as hot as Las Vegas in St. George and the surrounding areas.
We live in Northern Utah, (not native Utahns) and we have many friends and co-workers who plan to retire south.
I think "small town" southern Utah will soon become a thing of the past. And everyone and their brother wants to move to where "Best Friends" is... (animal rescue)

Well, Wayne County looks pretty isolated. I'd love to be a part of "Best Friends" one day. I could live in Wayne and volunteer at Kane. Anyway, I was looking on a year's worth of temperatures on accuweather.com and I know I don't want to live in the St. George area. I don't mind 100+ and dry once in a while IF it cools down at night but according to St. George, it's often that hot and sometimes doesn't cool below 80. I can't do that anymore. That's one reason why I'm praying I get out of Texas within the next few years. The summers are ridiculous and probably even worse than St. George due to the humidity. Torrey's year's temperatures looked pretty darn good. Even Kanab was good but, as you say, it may be full of people before I leave this Earth.
