Default TrC

Here's a variety from TrC, including an interesting complex of cottages, the RV park I'm in, and a shot of the ugly side, among others...

Thanks for the photos. They could not be more different from Long Island. It's almost like another planet ....

Default medical care in TrC

They Suck!
Can't sugar coat that one, although they do have transportation to Las Cruces, 60-70 miles south, for good medical care.
They are trying to build a new hospital, but the tedious arguments continue to stall any progress.
In terms of community planning, management, etc., that's their biggest weakness. Tedious arguments, and lack of competent leadership. Good leaders get fed up with this town's backward bickering.
The spaceport tax vote is in progress, and it appears that the 'new guard' wants a yes vote, and, of course, the 'old guard' wants a no vote.
I'm guessing that's the split over the hospital too, although I haven't been following the details. I do know, I was here 2 years ago, and it seems like the hospital was an issue then, and it doesn't seem like they've progressed much. Recently, the arguments have been a ridiculously high purchase price of land, and then a group wanted a complete evaluation of 'remodeling existing facilities', which would be a complete disaster. They need to just 'get on with it', but somebody will always find a way to perpetuate the stalling.
They really need a 'changing of the guard', whether it's the 'new' one now, or something else. They are very backward, and headstrong about petty things.

I would like to suggest a 'meet up' here in TrC, (1) because it's affordable, (2) because it gives us a chance to meet, and to see the variety of properties available, even if this is not the location we want.

How far is that from Las Cruces oe Santa Fe ? I have only heard about TorC because of the show. I think I am old enough to remember when they changed the name, sad to say. I would be interested in seeing New Mexico and meeting everyone , though.

Anomoly, thanks for the photos! Yes, I think you're right -- TorC could be a wonderful place if you have a ready-made support group. I just need to sell my house!! Talk about timing....we're in a recession!!

But...I do like the idea of being in TorC with hot springs nearby to soothe the weary bones....

Actually -- here is a success story: someone on here (I would have to look up the name) had a house for sale in TorC, and wanted to know what to charge for it -- I contacted the person, and told them I knew of someone ready to buy in TorC (in fact, Anomoly, I'd love you to meet her when she gets there in two months!). Well, the two talked, and voila - my friend is now buying that house -- before it hit the market, so they both save money! My friend just retired last week! Now, she had good timing (although she and her husband have been renting and don't have to sell a home to move). When I went to her retirement party, she was so excited and said, "Guess what? We bought a house!" and it was that house! I was soooo happy for her!!

Her sister also runs a small fudge company there (you may see their small packages in the local stores), although she and her husband live and work full-time in Albuquerque during the week. I love the idea of a small complex of apartments/cottages there. I know there is a hospital there, but I imagine it is not the greatest or has a lot of services, but it could, I suppose, serve for a transitional time before going to another hospital in a larger city...

I may not be able to get to TorC this summer -- I'd love to, but my daughter is starting college, and she's working during the summer, and I am the official chauffer, plus we have lots of pre-college stuff to do. However....I would bet my friend would be happy to visit in my place, if that would be okay!! She and her husband are moving in May or June -- once the house sale is finalized, and she gets everything packed.

Oh, and to Dancingearth -- I, too, have done pottery in the past and would love to have a pottery studio nearby!

And, NancytheReader, you're right, it is very different from Long Island! But the up side is that it is warm, SUNNY!! , low humidity -- none of that sweaty stuff where you have to shower 3 times a day to get the sweat off! The down side is that it is not rich in green foliage, however, you may, as I did, come to love the beauty of the colorful rock formations, the cacti, the skies full of bright stars, and the peacefulness of the area. It's called The Land of Enchantment for a reason!

It's starting to sound like a plan!

Ok, I-25 goes from Las Cruces north to Denver.
Start with:
Santa Fe - Albuquerque: about 50-60 miles south
Albuquerque -Socorro -TrC: about 150 miles south
TrC - Las Cruces: about 60-70 miles south
Las Cruces hits I-10, (E, SE)to El Paso, TX: about 45 miles.

So, Santa Fe is about 200 freeway miles south to TrC.

The nice thing about meeting here, is the proximity to Las Cruces, AND to Silver City, which is about 125 miles (2+hours).
From TrC, there's the quick boring route to Silver, or the scenic drive up through the mountains. The mountain drive is spectacular, and its worth driving one way, and take the boring route the other way.

I forgot about Elephant Butte Lake, which is huge and popular with snowbirds. The community of Elephant Butte is adjacent to TrC, but is more about snowbirds. The lake is probably about 6-7 miles from me, but the Rio Grande runs through TrC (good fishing).
South about 15 miles, the river becomes Caballo Lake, also huge, then Rio Grande runs south to Hatch, home of the Green Chilis, and lots of agricultural farming.
TrC is already kind of a 'retreat' town, with it's alternative health practicioners and hot springs district.
My pics of the lake are scant, I guess because when you travel alot, every lake starts to look the same in pictures. --and mine don't do it justice.

Actually, now that I think about it, ANYWHERE you want to see NM, I probably have pictures of it, as my 'state park annual camping pass' has gotten alot of use.
From Deming, Silver City, Quemado Lake, El Morro, Abique, Jemez, Bandolier, Chama, Taos, Santa Fe, Raton, Cimmaron, Red River, Las Vegas, Villanueva, Santa Rosa, Ft. Sumner, Roswell, Ruidoso, Alamagordo, White Sands, Las Cruces, TrC,
thats a clockwise tour of the state!
