Changing a furnace filter is simply one of the normal activities of daily living. Using a ladder when called for is simply another one of the normal acitivities of daily living. (I am 69).
Escort - Please don't minimize the difficulties of others for whom climbing a ladder is NOT a normal activity of daily living. You are healthy, limber and have a good sense of balance. Others are not so lucky -- at whatever age.

The real problem here is the stupidity of supposedly smart, educated engineers who design these HVAC systems and put them in inaccessible locations.

Our air filters are down low, but our smoke alarms are ridiculous.

We have a cathedral ceiling almost two stories tall in the living room and our bedroom and some jerk electrician put the smoke alarms at the top of the ceiling and we can't change them ourselves. So, when they go out and start chirping, which is always at one in the morning, it wakes us up and we have to listen to the loud obnoxious chirp all night or many nights until we can find an electrician with a scaffolding set up who is willing to get up there to change the batteries.

We finally just disconnected them.
Unbelievably stupid.
