"Successful aging"? So the goal is to succeed at getting older--not to find a place you might enjoy living? Not quite sure what the point of that is. Is getting older the next olympic competition?

Hmmm.... well, different strokes for different folks as they say. I guess the most obvious suggestion would be to avoid war zones and other places where you're likely to get killed.....

Reports are are nothing than a means of garnering readership/attention by making an outlandish contrarian statement, one that is obviously wrong.

I'm not big on cities unless you can find a niche neighborhood within them and get around within that neighborhood at age 80.

People who write these articles seem to be so far away from actual retirement themselves that they have no clue. Or in the case of this article they seem to be focused on recent indications / articles that many seniors may have to work into retirement due to insufficient savings, etc.

Thus, the article seems to be looking for places where " successful" aging means, being employed in retirement or " career opportunity" as they say. Maybe they're confused on what " retirement means".

Very interesting video. I can buy a good bit of what the researcher is proposing. My parent's generation tended to want little from retirement other than playing golf and dining early in a warmer locale where they no longer had to shovel snow (ideally near the beach). "Retirement" pretty much had a literal meaning. Boomers (at least those I know) are looking for more after they leave full-time employment: continuing education, volunteerism, sports like skiing (as opposed to golf), wellness programs (gyms, yoga, etc.), and other forms of personal development and community engagement. Of my contemporaries who have retired in the last five years, not a single one chose Florida.

As for this:

No, getting older is not the goal of successful aging. There is much been much research on the concept of "successful aging" for over 10 years now, resulting in numerous books and articles. Here is a simple overview for anyone unfamiliar with this concept: The Facts on Successful Aging

Anywhere but here (unless you have at least $2M or $3M socked away).

So many lists. I keep wondering if some of those places are paying under the table to be included. Or perhaps romancing the writers of these lists.

The "lists" are worthless.

Sure, it's just something else to put in the advertising budget. OTOH now that these lists are everywhere and are so obviously being used as gimmicks, I doubt they can get as many takers anymore. When I see a list like this I figure the purpose is to get people to buy the author's book.

When these lists first started appearing, I think the first few had some merit. But then all the hucksters jumped on the bandwagon. Lists you see these days are meant to get you to a look at web pages, or advertise something being sold.
