Last day of work June 1, 2012
So far so good. No regrets. Love not waking to an alarm. Anyway long story short, after spending a month in the mountains of Colorado. I found I enjoyed watching all the hummingbirds feed and fight.
When we got home Aug 1, I put up a hummingbird feeder, nothing. Until this morning! There is a shiny little green guy. Came during a rain shower. Has more or less been here for about an hour and a half now.
This is the life!
A friend who lives in Park City, Utah, has literally thousands of hummingbirds at her feeders. She has been feeding them for years. They do fight and make quite a racket for such small creatures. And they are so beautiful! Now that you have your first little guy, others will follow!
I hope so. I am afraid that in my area they are pretty scarce. I just sat down here at my computer again and looked out and here he/she came. Guess I don't know if it's male or female. I get other birds through here quite a lot but there is just something special about that little hummingbird. I am going to do the same as your friend and keep feeders out for them. I think I have read where they migrate a lot so some other weary travelers might pass by.
Word will spread. We put up a feeder and had no birds for 8-10 days. Then we had just a few. Now we have so many we need another feeder, maybe even two more. Having a bird bath or some other source of water will also draw them.
If you become interested in photographing them, I'd love to see a few shots. When we retire I plan to post all sorts of shots of the various things we do, and love to see what my fellow seniors are doing as well.
My cousin and her husband built their whole kitchen addition around the hummingbirds. They put in a big bay window with the feeders directly attached on the outside. Their kitchen table is right at the window, and every night at 7, they eat their dinner and watch the show. I'd love to do it too, but I fear my little terriers would not put up with birds hanging around "their" turf.
DH and I love them as well - they really are fascinating little birds. When the fall comes and they start to migrate south, we really miss them. This year was a little odd - had way more females than males, and the females were more dominant. About mid-way through the summer, noticed a big increase in males, and they are very dominant - constantly chasing the females away.
This is my first year at my new place. I put up the feeder and figured I might see one or none since it takes a while.
Well I have 2 regulars that are there everyday now and I have seen 3 at one time at the feeder. Only took about a month for them to find me. As I see more coming I'll fill that feeder up more.
I was at my old home for about 15 years and that last year I had 3 feeders up so many were coming.
The neighbors on either side also had feeders up so I wasn't worried about the little guys not finding food after I left.
