I think many men were in positions where facial hair was frowned on. Generally in upper management anything more then a moustache was frowned on. Now in retirement there is new found freedom to do what one wishes.
My goatee beard and long hair are seasonal. The beard comes off and the hair gets a #2 buzz cut when the weather gets warm. Actually just started growing the beard back. Will wait on the longer hair for a month or so more.

True, very true. For both the men and the women.

I think that short stubble or a shadow is distasteful.
I wore a full beard through most of my Active Duty military career. there were specific times when I had to shave, but mostly I wore a beard. When I was forced onto pension, I have 90-days of leave saved up so by the time I actually retired I already had 3 months of beard going.
Ten years later I am still growing it. Standing erect I think it reaches to between my nipples now.
Why? Because I prefer to wear a beard. I think that daily shaving is a PITA.
Beginning when I was about 30, when I shave I get a lot of in-grown hairs that get infected. When I was in positions where I had to shave daily, shaving over those infected cysts caused a lot of open sores and weeping drainage. The ingrowns were painful, the open wounds were painful, and the puss drainage was unsightly.
IMHO a beard feels much better than the alternative.

Heh, my dad wasn't allowed facial hair at work, immediately he retired he decided to go for the ZZTop look in full on gray. A little geriatric rebellion.

One poster mentioned the ingrown hairs that come along with older age...fairly common do believe.
Most of the younger yrs did use an electric razor with no problems while now find a few ingrown with my older ruddy complextion. Resorted to using the regular razor blade every 4-5 days that did help clear the skin a bit.
Lately have been letting it grow for 1-1/2 to 2 days and then using the old style razor that cleans the skin nice and smooth.
Will use the electric razor for a while and then back to the 1-1/2 to 2 day routine again,,,varys on how smooth the skin feels.
Have found that thru my younger yrs never had a mustache growing at all and now do so I compliment it with a neat appearing goatee......that is what nature has given us as we get older.

When I retire I think I'll go for the mustache and goatee look....Now, where I work won't allow anything more than a stache...
after 36 or more years
, yes it might be a little rebel in me.....
