Why do so many retirees start growing a beard? (spouse, best, older)

It's great to have important stuff to talk about in the Retirement Forum. Life would be boring if only trivia were available in internet discussion forums.
I agree. You folks entertain me with your humorous, intelligent, and insightful comments.
A thought: for those who hate the shaving thing - permanent, painful, laser hair removal!! It works and will eliminate those ingrown hairs, bumps, infections.
Guess I started my beard early ... a few months before our second child was born, and she's 31 now!
For me, it was simply a time saver. We had a long and sometimes ugly commute, and had to get up very early to "beat" (ha!) the traffic. Not shaving meant a couple more minutes of sleep.
But I found that I liked the beard ... a lot. More importantly, so did my wife.
And now I can't shave it off - I'm not sure, but I think I no longer have a chin!!!
I dunno about this. If a man is careful about his hygiene before growing a beard then he'll be careful afterwards. I'm sure some are hiding last night's dinner in there somewhere but clean hair does not naturally hold odor.
In my case I have no desire to sport the Santa look! That would be what I'd end up with.
Maybe you'd get lucky and end up as Colonel Sanders, like me.
(Here in Japan, every KFC restaurant has a life-sized Colonel outside. I can't count the number of times I've been asked to pose for a photo, holding a baby or hugging a cute young girl. Growing old has its compensations. )
If a beard has an odor, are you suggesting a person is not bathing? or shampooing?
Or simply are they using soaps that have no perfume?
I am cursed with a good sense of smell. And being vegetarian, when men eat meat, I can smell it in their beards. Even my own head hair holds odor and when I worked in a bar that allowed smoking, I always washed my hair before going to bed that night. It doesn't have so much to do with hygiene is just picking up odor from everything around you.
