OK, trivial subject, I know ... but I'm really stumped. We're having a party for my mother's 90th birthday soon, and I'm ordering a sheet cake for the event. But what do I have the bakery write on it?

I don't want to put simply "Happy Birthday [her name]" because most of the 35 people in attendance at the party don't call her by her name, and anyway she's always disliked her name. Attendees at the party will include her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews, sons- and daughters-in-law, and friends. So "Happy Birthday, Mom" would not say enough.

My dad's been gone 25 years, and she still grieves his loss, so I don't want to put anything that would be a strong reminder of him.

So I thought I would turn to the collective wisdom of this group. Can you offer a suggestion?

How about "Mom, Here are 90 Reasons Why You're the Best". Then print out 90 reasons, attach to tooth picks, and put them on the cake. Things like "your smile", "your meatloaf" etc. If you don't feel comfortable writing "mom" on the cake, you can leave the name off and just write the sentiment.

When my mom turned 75, we did a similar thing. We created a large poster that listed 75 favorite memories that involved her. The print was large, and colorful, and we hung the poster at the party. It was quite a conversation piece and something my mother really enjoyed.

At that age, a bonfire. Easier to light than 90 candles.

For simplicity's sake and truth, how about "You are loved!"

You did a good job of asking your question.

No need to write a short book on the cake, why not just put "Happy 90th Birthday!" ?

I would think that it would be the sentiments that you all express to your mother on her birthday that would be so much more meaningful than anything you could put on a cake. I think Happy Birthday is approrpriate for a birthday cake or nothing at all - just a beautiful cake with lots of verbal endearments for a much loved Mom.
