I retired the day I graduated from college. Ever since then, I've been working a retirement job. The easiest day in college is harder than the hardest day at work.
I retired on Feb 28, 2010, so I tend to count my time retired from March 1. I don't observe the anniversaries, however. I just realized; I have had a recurring dream where I have retired but continue to go into work everyday; I've stayed to finish one project, then another one and another one. I guess it's like the ones I used to have where I'm still in school and have overslept and missed an exam. I'm happy it's just a dream.
I would celebrate my last day at work. It was a Friday. I went to a lunch with my team. I came back, cleared all my personal belongings off my desk, walked around the site to say farewell to colleagues in other sections, handed in my pass and then drove out the gates without looking back. That was my severing the ties moment as I knew that I was leaving them behind on my life journey.
It sounds like it happened on just that day but actually was the culmination of a program which extended over several years because of the time required to train my replacement and to finalize a technical database. I left knowing that both these aims were completed to the satisfaction of all concerned. I went home and celebrated with DW at our favourite restaurant with a very fine bottle of vino.
I still haven't reached my first year anniversary but I think it's a great idea. As they say- life is short. Always a good thing to celebrate. I have something more to look forward to in July now ===thank you for the suggestion.
