While reading the Simpson Bowles proposal, I saw a suggestion to eliminate the "obscure Retirement Insurance Benefit limitation (RIB-LIM) for widow(er)s benefit." Hmm, obscure? RIB-LIM ? So, I looked it up and found that some widows should NOT wait until FRA to draw survivor's benefits. Those widows, unsurprisingly, are the ones whose spouses drew reduced benefits prior to reaching FRA. Some survivors will reach that limited amount/maximum before reaching FRA and waiting until FRA to collect is simply leaving money on the table. Really.

too late couldn't make a bigger text.. tried copying and pasting for effect, but sadly, my head exploded alone.

Filed late December for spousal and got benefit approval letter today. Did it online and didn't need to provide any documentation. Got a phone call the day after filing and wife and I had to answer and verify on the phone. Interesting thing was the letter saying I got approved for husband benefits. The other thing of note is the payment date is based on my wifes birthday and not mine since it is on her benefit.

•the benefit on his or her record is a higher amount, you will get a combination of benefits that equals that higher amount (reduced for age). To me this means I will claim my benefits first, and then will get an amount from my x-husband's ss to equal his because his is higher?

You claim your benefits first, and then will get more from x-husband if HALF of his is more than your entire benefit.

The answer will depend on your age currently, or when you plan to file, your Full retirement age, your spouses age, and FRA, when your spouse filed or plans to file etc.

If you filed for spousal retirement benefit and both you and your husband were FRA then you would recieve 50% of his benefit it it were more than your or if you wanted to let yours grow and take the spousal now and change to yours later with extra credits.
