I've never had a great memory so there isn't any difference. I always wrote notes to myself and I still do. Not really trying to help my memory but I do sell on ebay to get rid of stuff and that keeps your mind active and I do family history which gets really complicated.
There are natural remedies for mental focus, including such herbs as gingko biloba. I started taking that when I had to stay up late nights after a full day of work doing freelance. It is not a stimulant but a mental clarifier. I'm not making any recommendations, just saying what helps me based on research. I also find that certain foods, and eating too late in the evening, keeps me in a mental fog the next day.
Memory loss would be wonderful if you could selectively direct it. Never was any good at names but of late, my vocabulary seems to desert me at times. Most annoying.
People's names......then names of things (flowers,cars,cities,etc).....starting on words.....
What I do is sigh or curse and wait until it comes to me.
What I don't do is even think of applying for Jeopardy anymore.(Example...I didn't really intend to use the word "applying" but the one I wanted wasn't immediately available
Exactly! I find I can't think of the appropriate word. So use one that isn't.
And trying to come up with names of things I just use 'thing'.

it's worth a shot Ginko Biloba and vitamin b12. hmm. Also which foods?
All this reminds me of the old fellow who went to the doctor complaining about trouble with his left ear. The doctor found and removed a suppository from that ear and all was well. The old fellow immediately called his wife, who was still at home: "Honey, you can stop looking for my hearing aid - I've got a pretty good idea where it is".
Actually, dh was having slight memory problems and I had him take Ginko for a while. It helped and I read that it is a vasodilator and anti inflammatory. It will dilate the blood vessels in the brain. So if that's what you need, then Ginko could help, but if your memory problem is due to another cause, it won't help. In his case it stopped working after a while so I have to put up with "thingamajig" now. Maybe newenglandgirl will come back with some more recommendations, although I will google it myself anyway.
Some days I have to pick a co-worker up and take her to work. I really hate doing it as it's out of my way. Most of the time I forget and head straight to work only to realize that I have to turn around and go get her. I forget names a lot now and some simple words and I'm only 56. When I'm at work and things are really hectic my mind works faster and better. I guess the brain is like any other part of our body. Use it or lose it, unless Alzheimer's or dementia set in. There's not much you can do about that.
