In the past I never drank by myself and rarely drank with friends. One day I was spending my vacation at home and thought I would treat myself. I love the Ellen Degeneres show, so I poured a glass of wine along with some goat cheese and crackers and toasted to Ellen. I felt like I was a Parisian woman. I enjoy treating myself as well as ending the day with something special. Now I have a glass of wine while cooking dinner and watching Ellen and I thoroughly enjoy it. When I retire I hope to find a friend who will join me on my porch for a afternoon glass of wine.

Default Alcohol consumption and health

Actually it's healthier to drink in small amounts than not to drink at all, but the sweet spot is pretty small. And it's much, much healthier not to drink at all than to drink too much. Most medical suthoritites recommend no more than one drink per day for people over 65, a drink being defined as a 12-ounce beer, four to five ounces of dinner wine, or one ounce of hard liquor. For people under 65, the recommendation is still just one drink a day for women, but men can have up to two.

I will have a drink perhaps 2 to 3 times a week. I like a good quality Chardonay and sometimes a margarhita. On cold nights in the winter I will sip on Harvey's Bristol Creme sherry.

We love a glass of wine or a craft IPA around 5 o'clock with some hummus and crackers then dinner around 7 o'clock. It's usually a nightly thing unless we get busy and life takes us elsewhere. Our friends all drink. It's fun to go to each others' houses for wine and apps.

I drink about 2 to 4 ounces of scotch per evening. That is two on the rocks drinks between 5pm to 7pm. Suppertime about 7pm. Rarely have a drink after supper. Not a big beer drinker. Maybe one after golf on a hot day. I prefer red wine to white wine but I drink very little wine.

I laugh when I hear some report making these comments, as if they know what is best for everyone.I would not laugh if I got pulled over by a state trooper after having a couple of drinks with dinner and some wine to wash it down, ( wine is food you know ). I doubt he would consider your condition ( over the limit ) as justified because you told Him of the research study's and they said it was OK to consume ,as most people do, more than one or two ounces of booze.
Drinking too much is engrained in our culture, there is always a reason to overdo and too much will vary state to state. We think of other places and people like the Russians and Vodka as one of the three food groups. Sure, thats not us but you know we make up for it in other areas like beer and wine. More adult beverages are sold in the US than any other place in the world. Now the marketing is zeroing in on young people, get em while they are young.
There is only one right thing to do, don't drink anything stronger than coffee if you leave the house, plain and simple, and if you can't stop at one or two drinks consider yourself as a drunk who has a problem. It may take us 50 years to get this right, to understand, buy its the truth. If you have doubts,....don't drink and stay away from places where they encourage consumption, like on a airplane , a beach bar, anywhere, " where everyone knows your name."......

I have to be careful about mixing meds with alcohol so I don't drink much at all -- even wine. I take tylenol as needed and allergy meds, and tylenol in itself is hard on one's liver . . . and very bad in combo w/ alcohol.

Same for hubby and his cardiac meds, so we rarely have even wine, although I enjoy it . . . and I have always had fun with cocktails (mixing them, finding recipes). It is a hassle to juggle the meds w/ the alcohol these days, sadly.

When we have friends over in the summer, I typically make up a gallon of Sangria. In the winter, I typically offer Baileys and Kahlua for coffee. I do still stock a full bar for guests, but rarely enjoy any of it myself.

I no longer drink hard liquor. Just don't.

I usually have one glass a wine per day with dinner and just LOVE it.

What is your drinking habit?
I don't drink. Not because I'm a prude or a teetotaler but just because it doesn't interest me. I did plenty of it in my younger years but I was waaay more 'social' back then than I am now. Last Christmas I had two small glasses of wine, got a horrific headache and remembered why I don't drink! lol Alcohol just doesn't do a thing for me...except give me a headache! My parents let us have 'sips' of their drinks when we were kids, taking any 'mystery' out of it for us, and none of us drink now. I don't even remember the last time I was in a bar but I'm sure it was over 8 years ago.
