BTW, be careful to apply for Medicare just before turning age 65, regardless of FRA age for SS benefits. You cannot (normally) apply for Medicare before 65, and there are possible penalties for delaying.
pnwretired and kat in aiken..............Thanks for the info! I appreciate it. So it sounds as though I won't get a first check until 3rd week of Sept. and DH the 4th week of Dec. That will be good for planning.
I actually can't apply until next year but DH is contemplating whether to file this year or next. I have been unemployed for almost 2 years, except for a very part time job that I do 5 hours a week, so I am going to be forced to apply at 62. Hubby was going to wait until the end of next year as well to add another 8% to his monthly (he is 9 mo. older than me), but his work is getting less and less as well. In fact he is now down to 1/2 salary and will probably get worse by the end of the year. He is considering filing and then just doing consulting work for his company as long as he stays below the maximum amount allowable to be earned.
