I agree.

When I was working, we focused our tax-plan entirely on tax-shelters. Which allowed us to avoid income tax for 30-years.

Compared to someone who chooses to pay income taxes, you have a lot more cash to invest this way.

That is funny. It is a bit on the frigid side hence my reason for moving south away from there.

Sub I think he wrote that tongue in cheek. Nothing serious. Still he is right in that it is not just for convenience. Since it is so darn cold up there and some people might not travel very far to shop those might be the ones whose cars didn't warm up yet.
Getting into a warm car is nice.

If your car is hard starting, you need to get it fixed [or replaced].

It's not just in the winter. Where my mother lives, Montpelier, Vt, cars are left running with the A/C on in summer while people go shopping. Nuts. Nothing like expanding your carbon footprint for a tiny bit of comfort.

For their A/C? Wow, I have not seen that. Then again few people around here have A/C.

I only meant it as an observation of how low crime is around here.

But, to pick just one, Tennessee is an undiscovered gem. The outside view is that it is hot and full of hillbillies. I came to northeast Tennessee just over a year ago from a major metropolitan area. I could not be more pleased with the environment, the people, and the culture. I did a lot of homework on where to move and even though Tennessee looked good on paper (and met the large criteria of no state income tax, college town (progressive), large medical community (diversity), close to great outdoor activities, lots of cultural activities, good transportation....) it is a lot more than what I anticipated and has been a pleasant surprise on a number of fronts.
But is it hot?

Happens a lot of places. Usually they leave one person in the SUV so crime isn't too relevant but they do leave the vehicle running the entire time someone is in the store buying groceries so the a/c is running the entire time. I can shop for 20 minutes and the same vehicles which were running when I arrived are still there running when I come back out.

Agree with Kutra11, the ideal retirement is not to worry about taxes or cost of living. many of the laces with ideal weather, a lot of amenities nearby and low crime are high price, therefore, the goal is what can I create to be able to live anywhere regardless of the cost? That is the way I see it..

IMHO, there seems like there very very few places left to retire to in the USA, they are not crime riddled, or meth infested, .....not much too choose from anymore in the USA for a combination of low crime, low taxes, friendly and welcoming people, and without natural disasters. Maybe one or two places in the entire country imo.

You live in Houston;no? Why would you say you hear? In Houston like any large city there are very high crime areas and very low .Depends on what you can afford as to location.
