Howdy,

I'm thinking of moving back to Sioux Falls SD when I retire (within a year and a half or so) from where I live now in the San Francisco Bay Area. Crazy? Well, I'd move to Sioux falls which has a metro area of 200,000 and I also have family there as well as college and high school friends.

There's no state income tax in South Dakota and since I rent in CA, I'd rent there, too, and can probably rent the same type of apartment or condo that I rent in the SF Bay Area for about 60% of what I currently pay.

True, it gets cold in the winter and I'm thinking I can use my savings from no state income tax, cheaper rent , and cheaper costs in general to fund a couple of months in a warmer climate...maybe even back in California in Sacramento or somewhere cheaper than I am now...

Does anyone have any good ideas of how to go about renting a furnished studio or perhaps a room with cooking capabilities, wifi, good cable TV, etc for a couple of months in the winter? Thanks for any ideas.

Burk

There are motels with kitchens which have weekly rates.

How about using a travel trailer for a couple of months? Plenty of snowbirds do. You might even be able to rent one for that period of time.

I second the motion for vrbo.com. I've used it successfully several times, both in the US and internationally. Just be sure to establish an email conversation with the owner of a property you're thinking of renting, ask lots of questions, use a credit card to pay for your rental.

Renting furnished studio for two months when I snowbird...
I hope so. People do that sort of thing all the time. Do it.

pickiness: That's still in the "vacationing" arena.
Snowbirding requires having a nest of your own.

In an actual vacation destination ... the vacation rental listings.
For an area like Sacramento ... craigslist.
Sublets Situation Wanted Vacation Rentals

The larger problem may be in trying to do this long distance.
You can't really be sure of them and they'll find it hard to trust you.

The author of this thread picked up a nice inexpensive Mobile Home a few blocks from the beach in Santa Cruz. If you could buy similar and sublet it 10 -12 months / yr, it might be a money maker and pay for your furnished apartment in Tahiti or Barcelona.

Better to hold that type of property in an income tax free state. (FL or TX would work for 'tax-deductible' a winter retreat)

I hold rental properties in various climates that include a spare apartment for me, when I get the urge to escape winter in PNW.
