I highly recommend signing up on line. As noted in a previous thread last Friday I applied for spousal benefits on line. Got a phone call from SS on Saturday going over and verifying everything. Fortunately both the wife and I were sorta at home. I was at a neighbors and had to run home phone in hand. Today I got documentation from SS verifying the phone conversation and that I needed no additional documentation. Didn't need to submit marriage verification. My wife had to get on the phone verify who she was and that we were married. We think when she applied for benefits we submitted a marriage certificate at that time so it would have been in the file. So all is good and done in seven days including a weekend and holiday. If you can go on line I recommend it and when the first of you applies it may help to submit your marriage certificate then. Hope this helps someone.
I liked when I signed up in person. Then they had appointment maker online; not any more. Was given date and time. Showed up with documents listed ;took about 30minutes ;given papers showing all details. Received first payment as listed on paperwork. No back and forth or trusting some original documents to mail or government.
I signed up online, but try to get an answer by phone. Each answerer has a different
Answer for the same question.
