Retire in Myrtle Beach
My husband & I are looking to retire/relocate within next 6 months from West Hills (LA) CA to maybe Myrtle Beach.
He's worried about hurricanes. We're both curious about humidity.
Even though we're in The Valley and summers here can break 100 most of time it's pleasant (we love the heat) cause we're in the foothills. Also, as soon as it gets dark The Valley gets cold. So ... we're used to living with the windows open. Can you do that on the East Coast?
The Valley's very laid back.
Any one have any comments/thoughts you'd like to share?

The southeast has very humid summers. Right on the coast is a little cooler and will usually have a breeze, but it is nothing like S. CA. The night time temps in the summer don't fall like they do in CA - way too much moisture in the air. But lots of people love Myrtle Beach. There are periodic hurricanes and sometimes a Hugo slams in which would do a lot of damage.

And please visit during the height of tourist season if you are thinking about any tourist spot. The traffic in cars and people will be very different than any other time of year.

You are so right about visiting during tourist season. I have been to Gulf Shores and Sarasota before and during season, you can be stuck in traffic in FL and in Gulf Shores the weekend traffic can be a solid line of traffic. Of course, if you live there you can find ways around the traffic some of the times.
I would also ask on the NC forum..

Myrtle Beach has grown so in the past 15 years. It can be very congested and "touristy". Humid-yes very in summer.

As an avid golfer, I thought I'd love to retire in MB. But after spending a lot of time on the "strip" - I've changed my mind. Would recommend a trial run in the area for settling there too long. |

Definitely check the SC forum - there's a discussion of the Myrtle Beach crime rate, which seems astonishingly high, even for a tourist destination.
