Have any of you seniors just out of the blue suffer from Restless Leg Syndrome ? My husband got this condition around Christmas and is it steadly getting worse. He is on Requip 2mg. but it is not helping. Does this condition just attack you out of nowhere ? Advice please,I understand this can be a devastating condition. What specialist would you go to for this ?

Have him try Mirapex or the generic, instead. It is really frustrating, isnt it? I went to a board certified Neurologist and Sleep Medicine doctor, but my family practitioner was the one that prescribed it. She's good. Good luck to him with it, its no fun.

Mine was diagnosed during a sleep study. I didnt know I had it. Thought it was leg cramps.

My wife has had it as long as she can remember. Some days are better than others. I wish I knew why. She has been on Mirapex for several years. I believe genetics can play a part as her aunt has it too.
Being aware of RLS, when I go out in public it's interesting to see how many people "can't sit still"

It's no picnic for the spouse either.

I have a mild case of it unlike a couple of yrs ago when it was bad. When i went to my doctor i asked her if she ever heard about RLS, her reply was a matter of fact yes. I didn't know it was fairly common problem. She said there were prescriptions for, needless to say i won't take them. This is what i do when it starts acting up, it's simple but it works for me. I have long strips of cloth that i wrap around the calf of my leg(s) as snug/tight " my comfort zone" as i can without cutting of the circulation. This usually works enough for me to fall asleep, i usually wake up several times a night when i do i take off the wrap. The RLS i gone by then. Like i said this works for me.

My husband was on Mirapex too. I was concerned about the long term effects so I did some searching on Google. Now he takes magnesium asportate or citrate, bought in a health food store (I have never found magnesium that works, in a pharmacy) plus zinc piccolinate. He called the pharmacy and told them to cancel the Mirapex because this works even better.

An improvement was the discovery of magnesium oil which he just rubs on the bottoms of his feet--sometimes it's easier than taking the magnesium pills--and it is very easily absorbed right through the skin.

I knew from caring for my parents that most older people need the zinc so we fell back on it one time when we were on a car trip and he had forgotten the Mirapex. Just a just trip to CVS to get some zinc which he took several of over the course of about an hour. We had been driving all day and by night his legs were so bad that he couldn't drive and couldn't even stand it if I drove. But after he had taken enough zinc, he was able to drive again.

Magnesium relaxes the muscles and almost everyone is lacking so we added that in and the combination works perfectly and I don't have to be afraid of long term effects. The body needs it anyway.

He will need to take extra if he drinks soda, beer (or any alcoholic beverage) or has too much caffeine.
He needed a lot of extra magnesium when he had a few beers with friends recently--he was in agony. We had just bought the magnesium oil so he rubbed it on his legs and he said it was like turning a switch!

Thank you all for the input. I want to try the Magnesium but first have to check it out with this doc. He has kidney disease and I am not sure he can tolerate it. But thank you.

Shame so many are taking drugs. Goodness! Fix the problems, not mask them!

I find that 50 mg of Tramadol, 2-3 hours before bed pretty much eliminates it for me.
