I find this forum, in most cases, having good and useful advice. I recently applied, and now this month (age 63), am receiving my first check. I have had 3 conflicting conversations with different SSI agents. I am currently working part time. There is a limit to how much I can make a month. One agent said I could put away 50% of the amount I go over the limit and pay them back at the end of the year, which I prefer. Another said I can't do that. I would not have three months checks (July, Aug, Sept) sent to me. This is confusing. Does anyone have a relevantly simple answer to this?

I'd rely on the SS publication of Social Security and you on SS site. It says once you go over they reduce your benefit clearly. My guess is its from reported earnings on taxes withheld based on W2 deductions. It would be nice if you could collect; use it then repay only that amount tho; but from reading its not the case.

Thanks.
You're right it would be easy if we could pay them at the end of the year. I will try one more time with another call to them top see if I get 2 out of 3 answers on one of the questions

ISTM you need to read the booklet on SSI, located at
http://www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-11011.pdf

Especially the example given on page 4, and page 6, to understand your responsibilty to report any income, and how to handle any re-payments.

The booklet also goes into the many other reporting responsibilities folks on SSI have to adhere to.

Good luck..........

To be absolutely clear any replies are relevant, are you talking about SS benefits or SSI?
Too many use the acronyms interchangeably when they are actually two different things.

Be sure you know how the pay back works. I think it comes in the following year by not paying your monthly benefit until it is paid back. I am not sure this is correct. Just a heads up to make sure you know how it works so you do not spend the money you have to pay back.

Important point. SSI is a supplemental benefit to raise your SS to some minimum $ amount. In CA that amount is $853 per month. If one has any earnings, the SSI drops off. Say you get $800 in SS and $53 SSI. You earn $153. No SSI for you the following month!

If this is ss, they want an estimate of what you will earn in advance.
Then they will withhold all Mahoney to cover that estimate.
