It's still John for me - all of the characters have a redeeming quality (that doesn't show all the time), but John doesn't have any.

Gillian is just an insecure person, but has a good heart. I think she is by far the best actor in the series though. I think we all agree John is the dirt bag.

I totally forgot the 2nd episode was on last nite...I was outside mowing, and when I came in it was 10 til 9....and it started at 8. I almost cried!!! Tried to find somewhere to watch it online...I swear I got the heebie jeebies since I had missed it.

Fortunately PBS had it online today, and I just watched it. Love it!!! Man, Gillian went bonkers in that episode, didnt she?

Gillian's backstory is more complex than the others'. She has little money, a farm she's trying to keep going, a day job that doesn't pay much, a kid she raised herself, an ex who died (I forget how, and what was that stuff about her letting him die, etc? I missed that) with a BIL who blames her for his death. And a deadbeat boy-guy she needed just for sex. Messed up like real people in real life.

Her dad is her anchor. Without him she's lost. So she resents the new wife. Not unlike real life. Plus I think she thinks she looks after him, esp at his age.

She's acting according to character, even if not very laudable.

eta: I agree about John. He's every sane woman's nightmare.

Just in case no one has seen it ...

Spoiler
Both Alan and Gillian waited for him to die before calling the ambulance. It was implied that he was fatally injured. Or may have become a vegetable? Not sure on that point.

Looks like two babies will be added to the cast before long. Several sets of real-life British parents with real-life babies and kids are going to earn some money.

I was wishing maybe the female couple would take the unwanted child and solve all the problems. But I guess that woman wants her own biological baby.
