I haven't read all the comments here but the comment about the surgeon reminded me of my recent visit to an orthopedic doctor. He was older, perhaps 65, and obviously not enjoying his work anymore. I could tell he was stressed and wishing to be anywhere else but there as he complained about all the never-ending technology he had to keep up with. It was not a good experience for me, the patient. Medical providers like that should retire or change careers regardless of whether they are financially able to or not.
Be careful what you ask for. I was forced to retire due to health problems. I was not ready and did not want to. It took three sit downs with Mrs. Tek telling me I had to stop or I was going to trash someone's computer system before I finally relented.
I was bored silly for a few years. Things are getting better now.
Ouch! That's quite a commute. Isn't that a big part of the problem? Do I correctly assume that you live in NJ and work in New York City? Also, I assume you take some sort of commuter train so you can at least read during the commute? If you are driving your car, that's really difficult.
Yes Escort, it definitely adds to the frustration even taking public transportation. I live in Central Jersey and drive a half hour to take the Seastreak Ferry (655.00) per month. Ferry is around 55 minutes. The Real issue is i get up at 4:45 am and get home at 7:30 pm. Finish dinner at 8 and just exhausted from the long day. And on top of this i have a sleeping disorder. Get around 3-4 hrs of sleep a night. I went to doctor and he doesn't believe in sleeping aids. He says exercise when I get home. Priceless......................................... .

No sleeping aids....assume you mean medicinal/pharmaceutical......what about the tried and true method of booze??
Thanks for all the folks who responded to my post, lots of excellent advice and support. I studied my finances, I resigned my job, I gave proper notice, and I have a few months to get my house in order, I plan to recreate myself and have lined up a position that is related but totally different compared to what I currently do, much less stress, and decent pay and benefits for another 5-6 years, and then I'm done, some think I'm crazy to leave a prestigious job with a well known organization but I know I'm doing the right thing and feel like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I just got an email from my boss today with a whole new set of requirements to meet my yearly goals, I just laughed, bye bye! Thanks again everyone.
The older I became, the more I realized that time is so much more important to me than money.
I'll be retiring in a few months and am beyond burnt out and ready to leave. I cannot imagine myself "mowing the lawn with scissors," as one poster says (even though I love that image!).
I think if people do walk away and give themselves a break, something else will open up at the right time and in the right place. Your happiness is certainly one of your most precious possessions and, in my opinion, should be fiercely protected.
Ha! You posted your follow-up at the same time I was posting my advice!
I am so happy to hear of your decision. You sound better already !!
I seriously doubt you'll regret your decision, and I wish you happiness in your new job and your sooner-than-it-feels-like retirement!
