Financially, yes. We planned and we're good. Location wise, no. We missed our mark but I'm glad it happened. We retired early, still in our fifties to Florida. It was good for us to live there for the six years that we did. Great experience. It taught us a lot. Now we're relocated, closer to family and friends but there are some things we miss about Florida and we spend some of the winter there. Everything is a lesson. We're more learn-as-you-go people. We're also not done tweaking locations. The term 'final house' gives us the heevie-geevies.
I'd rather have smooth as glass than crests and troughs
The waves were pre-retirement and could have screwed up retirement but didn't. The only wave after retirement was the market crash but that turned out ok. Actual retirement by most standards has been very smooth plus. It is all relevant however to the context we put it in.
I am so sorry. I'm widowed too. Two months is a very short time in the scheme of grief. Be gentle with yourself, give yourself time, don't rush to make new plans.
Grief is hard work and we are very vulnerable. That is why we are all advised not to make any long-term decisions while we are in the grip of it. It takes a while to stabilize. Best wishes to you and your family.
Death of a spouse either shortly before or during retirement has got to be a game changer. That is the biggest dagger as it changes how you were going to spend the rest of your life together. It is my one dread.

I agree on the 'final house' thing. I love where we are now, but I am pretty sure this will not be our last house depending on lots of things.
