The problem at 4 way stops from what I've seen is not over aggressive drivers, it's divers who are too polite. The inefficiency comes when nobody goes, everyone waits for the other guy. Drives me crazy.
That's typically due to people not knowing the right-of-way rules. But even worse is when they do know but violate them anyways. I've nearly gotten T-boned multiple times due to this.
One of the most confusing traffic maneuvers I've experienced was in Road Town, Tortola. In the middle of town where traffic is fairly heavy there is a three-lane circle. Rental cars on the island are American-style (steering wheel on the left), but driving rules are British (drive on left). Traffic circle runs clockwise instead of counter-clockwise, of course. It made my head spin.

That would confuse me. Roundabouts should be one way. That would eliminate the head on collisions I see as a possibility in those.
It looks like a nightmare (I wouldn't go on it). But I know someone who lived there and she said it's easy as you just treat each circle as separate roundabout.
I would have a big problem using roundabouts in a country where you drive on the right. I learned to use roundabouts in a country where you drive on the left. Turning right onto one would just seem w.r.o.n.g.
On a broader philosophical level, I object to the thread title, even though it is just repeating the title of some article. Why would we seniors, as a group, "struggle" with any particular traffic situation? Do we suddenly become incompetent drivers after a certain age? I am 70 and I do not "struggle" while driving. Maybe when I'm 80 it will be a different story, but that will be a sign my life is over.
My little town of 35,000 didn't have traffic problems until they put in 7 roundabouts in 6 months. No one could figure them out and everyone struggled until they got used to them...age had nothing to do with it.
I hate them and it has nothing to do with age. We have a 4 way stop at a close intersection and people are so use to it it's like a waltz - traffic just keeps moving and most people understand when it's their turn and take it. There are always exceptions.
Now they are talking about a roundabout - I see a total mess since it is a high traffic area.
