We'd love to find a retirement community as gorgeous as several in Arizona (we like Sun City Festival and Quail Creek) but with a town center. We had a dream of living in a community where you could walk to a downtown yet it had the amenities of the two mentioned above.
I am aware, and once had a place, in The Villages near Ocala, Florida. There's another not far from Orlando called Solivita. Our problem is, we prefer not to live in such humidity. Secondly, one of the drawbacks of almost all retirement communities is, they look like suburbs with house after house crammed along both sides of a street. Oh, where is the room to breath, to stroll, to see nature? Must we all live in cookie cutter neighborhoods dressed with fancy rec centers and golf courses?
Do you know of any other retirement communities with areas of restaurants and shopping that can be reached by walking or golf car?
To my limited knowledge, retirement communities are closed entities and not typically part of the town. If you want that, you'd simply live in town near a center, and that would mean a mixed neighborhood. Those I've looked at casually are off in suburbia and sometimes more rural. Not a hop skip and jump to anything.

I think what GENER may be referring to is a master planned community, like this one (near me) but exclusively for seniors.
Here's another master planned senior community with the "fake" town center, lol. I don't know what to call it b/c it is really NOT a total village but it is retail, and it is in the center and connects the other housing units.
Oh ho, Gene, you want what every retiree wants ! I want it too, but it doesn't exist, at least I have not found it here. There are lots of small towns in the US that you can live in and walk to a center square, have a cuppa, do some shopping, see neighbors, but its not just for seniors. The major reason is the senior communities want to keep it all homes to maximize the money profit. If they let in a bunch of stores, how would that profit them? I don't know of any in AZ although SunLakes comes close. There isn't a town square, but the major road (Riggs) has most of the stuff one needs (gas, grocery, some shopping, restaurants (fast food). Or yes, medical too. And you do see the golf carts on the road alot. Did you see Sun Lakes while here???
I considered Sun City Summerlin in Las Vegas when looking for a place to retire, and for various reasons, opted for a different community. It's on the west side of the Las Vegas valley, adjacent to the Spring Mountains, Red Rock Canyon and Mt. Charleston. It really is a lovely community and there are shops and restaurants within walking and golf-cart-riding distance.
This village is exactly what I'd like to see but prefer age-restricted. I really like the looks of Baxter. Thank you.
From the website, it does not look like Baxter is a 55+ community (see photos).
