I would also submit that many minimum wage earners have suffered through things like undiagnosed learning disabilities, PTSD, domestic violence etc. We are too quick to point an accusing finger at those whose struggles we dont see or understand.
Compassion seems to be a lost art.
Absolutely. Abject and callous self-centered disregard for others seems to be in vogue, these days.
But there are also folks who have worked strenuously to put themselves through college only to find professional jobs lacking once they graduate. Plus having 50-100K in student debt.
Then there are folks who learned a trade, lets say auto repair or construction, only to find that wages have stagnated for decades. Used to be you could raise a family on these types of jobs. (Which are still needed.)
There are no pension plans, few matching 401K's, few benefits, no guaranteed sick leave or vacation and yet we spew hate on those whose everyday struggles most of us cannot imagine.
Personally I cannot agree with the vitriol commonly seen on these sites against people who go to work every day, and Lordy, don't have a million to retire on.

How many lost all their equity in the 07-09 meltdown? Had to raid their 401K's to feed themselves or save their underwater homes? Had to take SS @ 62 in order to live when the unemployment insurance ran out when no one would hire a greybeard?
Have we forgotten all that in a couple years? Compassion and understanding cost nothing. Be generous with your thoughts even if you cannot be generous with your lucre.
no where did i say a thing about having a million dollars i only spoke about minimum wage jobs as career path..
there will always be those who find a way to get above minimum wage , the rest will just find excuses. that is fact. it has no bearing on feeling sorry for them or not.
it is only a statement that folks need to reinvent themselves to do well and go where the food is. they can't wait for something to float their way.
i had to do it myself when being a professional drummer i saw the handwritting on the wall because DJ'S and canned music was coming on the scene and i had visions of it killing off my career path which it did..
i had zero other skills , druimming was all i knew but i knew i had to switch gears here and find the food. so i did,.
we have a regular poster here who by his own admission will never make more than minimum wage and has a list of excuses as long as my arm as to why. all of which he is really in control of but chooses not to be.

I don't think feeling "sorry" for anyone makes a difference to them or you. Perhaps its just an absence of blaming/shaming people who can't, for what ever reason, compete.
It's like blaming the downs syndrome kid for not placing high on the SAT. Should we just kill those who are less?
I'd like to think that we "Americans" are more generous and kind than that.
let me repeat what i said . minumum wage jobs were not designed to be someones career path forever.
whether it turns out to be the case or not the fact still stands.
there are hundreds of reasons why someone may be trapped but it does not change what i said. it doesn't change the fact there will always be those in identical situations that will prosper.
this isn't a debate about emotions or feelings. it is what it is , you will have creative motivated people that will make sure minimum wage jobs are not staying as their career path and they will succeed where others fail.

Seniors who are struggling should be helped out, younger folks, however, had better get with the program and learn some marketable skills. Theres no excuse for being a young slacker...
We have been through this discussion before. I wonder what percentage of the non-savers has a secure pension adequate to live on in retirement. That would make a HUGE difference, although I am not advocating that people with pensions do not (ideally) need savings as well.

many are just not employable or emploable much above minimum wage.. most companies today require background checks , drug testing and credit score checks.
many can barely be understood when they speak , have little reading comprehension and have 3rd grade math skills.
many can't get better jobs or employment at all based on so many other factors other than job skills.
many employers but lots of weight ,right or wrong on these filters and it cuts many out from eith a job or a better job.
here in nyc we have been seeing in the black communities only 1 out 10 not dropping out of school. the unemployment rate for blacks of working age is 50%.
it isn't the fact there are no jobs or better jobs available.many cut themselves right out of the running by making themselves unattractive as applicants to employers .
