In my opinion, Home upkeep is so expensive because there are so many rip off artists out there. At least here in GA, lumberyards are selling the same garbage Home Depot sells so it's hard to find quality wood to use. No pride in craftsmanship. I feel bad for the normal homeowner who doesn't know much about construction. My builder guy is registered with a lead service that allows him to post comments and ratings from previous clients/projects. Plus he has a website with some examples of his work. Be smart.
But it's still expensive. I know as a single parent I bought a wood frame house built in 1960. I couldn't afford upkeep. My son lives there now and can't afford upkeep. It has issues that have needed repair for years and it doesn't get better. One day we'll travel back there and get it done.
it sure can be,. damn ,i could have had a heart transplant for less than a few implants. ha ha ha
long term care insurance adds a lot to our expenses now as well. i pay just about the same for all of our insurances as i do rent and i live in queens in nyc.
ownerhip of an apartment like ours would still add about 6-7k a year more than renting to our expenses.
Neither of these 2 sentences has ever been uttered in Upstate NY
Well, dental sure is expensive where I live. Crowns break and need to be replaced, implants cost a small fortune, cleanings and checkups at least twice a year along with xrays.
It may be just New England or just this state, but everything here seems to be more expensive. Rents, repairs, groceries. High heating bills in winter, snow removal (yuck).
Sometimes I wish I had grown up in some cheaper part of the country. Then I wouldn't have to toy with the idea of relocating to a cheaper area--I'd be there already.
My House is not my TOP retirement expense, but close...
