There's nothing "disorganized" about it. It's freeing! Ergo you can make schedules and routines, or not, as the mood suits you. If you really need them you might as well go back to work.

Why am I sensing control issues with these two posts?
I don't know. I think I need a little bit of a schedule in my life. But the beauty of retirement is, you don't have to follow the schedule. This week we haven't either. We've slept late several days this week.

That's a start. Here's me: M, T W stayed up late, slept in late, Thursday woke up about 8, went to bed early. Friday woke up at 5 am and I'll be heading to bed anytime now; that's what it's like.

This my most favorite thread by far! I love it and feel cheered up by reading all things people do and more importanyly not do every day.

We love mornings with our coffee and newspaper and read every page, sudoku, bridge. It is wonderful to feel you have endless time to do everything.
We both go to the gym but at our timings.
I have been cooking from scratch every day but now easing up a bit. It takes way too much time so i make simpler meals, with fresh produce, cheeses, pasta, leftovers, lots of soups and lovely breads.
We go to the movies and get something to eat after.
I spend a lot pf time planning trips.
We are leaving for LA shortly. Summer a road trip down south and another trip to the rockies.
I meditate and do yoga.

This all sounds great to me! I guess my definition of a "routine" doesn't mean it's do or die, but provides SOME structure. I don't HAVE to do laundry on Wed. but I'm definitely not skipping a week unless I'm traveling! And I do like ANTICIPATING and PLANNING travel almost as much as actually doing it - then i get to enjoy it DOUBLE!

Good, Each to his own!

I would really be in a time crunch if I PLANNED my travel or even took time to pack. (4 trips in last 2 weeks, 2 were unexpected, unplanned and totally different that expected)

I am 'scheduled' for 3 more in January (and one more yet in Dec). I would bet most will change dates / destinations...That's why I book SWA (free changes)

As an engineer my life was so ordered on the necessary items, that those things that are flexible get real flexible. Travel is most certainly flexible. I often don't pick up a map till I arrive at destination (wherever that ends up being). I stay as long as I want, and I turn left when I see something that looks interesting. I usually am last to board the plane, cuz I always offer to give up my seat to someone who MUST be on a schedule. I like the free perks! Often I will get a voucher just for offering to wait for others to board, and to wait for last minute commuters / late transfers. If I forget to pack something (often), I learn even more by having to go without or be resourceful to substitue an alternative. (It is bad when you forget your coat and land in a MSP or ORD winter... BTDT)

I LUV what I discover on the unexpected detours of life. If I were 'ordered', I would wait till the work was done and detour was closed. Then I would have missed out on all the special people / activities that get passed up by the freeways of the direct / most common path.

I travel backroads. This week we stayed an extra day at a guesthome to help them decorate for xmas, and to help pack their eBay shipments that HAD to get out. That delays cost some time last in Carmel, CA, but If we missed out on something, we didn't know and will catch it next time. (maybe, maybe not.)

haha - you're right - to each his own! 4 trips in 2 weeks is too hectic and rushed for me...more stressful than my current work so not what I'd do in retirement.

Sounds like some folks really react to their "scheduled" life while working and so go the opposite in retirement.

What's so great about retirement is that your routine can change on a whim and it's you that can change it.

Some days I go to bed early, some days late.
On nice days I spend the afternoon outdoors while on ugly days I spend indoors.
I can read whenever I want and for however long I want.
I do tutoring in schools and can pick which schools I want to go to based on the hours/days they want a tutor (the money is not needed).

Some routines I've kept such as food shopping days, laundry days, etc. Another big one I've kept is the annual December "clean out" of all my old paperwork no longer needed and going through the pantry checking expiration dates and moving food around so the earliest expiration date is at the front. But because I'm retired I don't have to plan it for a weekend and rush through it.

One of the first things I did was check out thrift stores on 'senior days' for the discount. I've always loved finding a deal and it's even more fun now that it's even cheaper. I found a great office chair, in mint condition, for $30 the other week. When I downsized I went a little too far & only kept the things I really loved, along with a variety of work clothes for church.

Now I'm having fun replacing the things I sold or gave away.

We have a bit of a routine.

Up at 7 AM to go walking. weather permitting. But not every day. If we do it three days in a row, we take the fourth day off.

Mon-Fri I am at the computer by about 9:15 to check on the stock market. The rest of the day is flexible between doing some stock trading, working on cleaning up the brush, vines and ferns in the back yard and whatever else might come up (sometimes that may be a short nap).

5 PM every day I am at the nursing home until about 7 visiting my mother. Then it is back home for my dinner. I am lucky that it is only about 10 minutes away.

Only weekly routine is we go grocery shopping together on Thursday morning.

The nice thing about being retired is pretty much any of that can be changed as we need/desire.
