I would think most people who live in climates cold enough to have to chip ice off the windshield on a more than rare basis would have a garage for the car(s). You mean that's not a normal "go-with" of the housing stock, like good insulation and double-pane glass?
I understand the ice chipping would get old in a hurry when one is struggling to make it to work on time.
I live in an apartment complex. Don't need a garage here in TN. If I rented one I wouldn't be parking right in front of my building and that matters when you have to lug groceries and packages. The Maryland suburban apartment complex didn't have garages but if it did, it would have been the same deal (suburban apartment complex) - you don't park directly in front of the building, they are clustered. Only two story suburban townhouse complexes usually have attached garages. But then, you are dealing with stairs inside your dwelling every day. Don't need that, either.

Yes, but it doesn't last as long. We whine for a few days and then it's back to shorts and tee shirts. My grass is still green! We have had some nice gentle rain. I have a couple wild parakeets fly to the bird feeder every morning. It's nice.
It was 5 degrees (I know it was even colder where some of you live) when I woke up this morning and thought, it's still dark out, it's cold and I don't have to warm up the car or scrape the windshield because I'm retired and I don't have to go to work. In fact, I don't have to go outside at all today.
So, who thought of the benefit of being retired today because of the temperature where you live while you were casually having your morning coffee/tea/hot chocolate?
I said it last night. We had a low of 19 degrees F., and I thought to myself and I am sure glad I don't have to get up and out in this weather.
It is an ice rink outside ...after icey rain over night...poor people!

Garages for cars are a luxury. There are many homes that do not have garages, even in climates where you have to chip ice off your car. In my case, I was parked in an outdoor lot because of safety issues.
In the winter, the complex bulldozes the snow in the lots but in clearing the central path behind the cars, they create walls of snow immediately behind the cars so even though there is a clear path if you want to drive into the lot, there is a WALL of snow to dig out if you want to get your car OUT of your particular spot.
After so many winters I finally had it and switched to an underground spot. It's not even near my apartment. I have to walk two blocks to the car. I am on a waiting list that is about six years long to get a spot (closest one would be about 300 feet from the front door) closer to me.
Mostly I toss more wood in the woodstove about every hour. I play on-line a bit. We have livestock that I need to feed every day, but that only takes about 20 minutes.
Today I decided to un-mount the loader-bucket from my tractor, and mount my snow-blower. It may have taken 10 minutes to get the loader-bucket off. Now I have finished a cup of tea, and I will head back out to mount the snow-blower. that should take 20 minutes.
We only got about 3 inches today, hardly enough to bother with. But I want to be ready in case we do get any more.
It is truly a joy to drive a tractor, with a pto-powered snow-blower. I can toss the snow 40-foot in any direction. Our 100-yard driveway takes about 15 minutes, then I check on neighbors.
