Find some kind of housing where property taxes are already very low. For example, I was told that in florida, if you have a mobile home, your property taxes are almost nothing. Then all you have to worry about is the lot rent. Lot rent in some places is very low. We have a nice park here in Lubbock that is only about 200 bucks a month. Mobile homes can be purchased for very cheap, and your not subject to all the problems and costs you typically have with stick built homes in a subdivision.

I did a complete evaluation a while ago and figured out, first that housing is one of your biggest cost in retirement, including maint. taxes and insurance. Its also one of the easiest things that you can change, and control costs.
One cost I fear is going to effect almost everyone is rising homeowner insurance premiums over the coming years. The reason? The weather is becoming crazier! A couple of years ago, there was a tornado on Christmas Day [or maybe it was Christmas Eve]. Tornados now occur in places they never used to, like Virginia and New York, and at different times of the year. One day, a couple of years ago, there were over 200 tornadoes reported on a single day. Heavy flooding is happening due to extreme rainfall and heavy snow. Wildfires in all sorts of places. Did I mention hurricanes? As a result, claims are rising, and premiums increase. It does not matter if you live in a SFH, APT, or MFG home, the rising rates hit you one way or another.
Part D covers less and less. Because I take several meds, and two of them are not generic, I hit the doughnut hole about mid year.
