I just read a brief article stating that many Americans are retiring to Belize and having a wonderful lifestyle on Social Security alone.
I think I would be afraid to move outside the US to live but I am curious if anyone reading this has done so or has friends who have. What is your experience with it?

Three big pluses for Belize...

-peaceful nation
-English is main language
-Exchange is 2:1

Maybe you should take a vacation down there..a long one (30 days) and experience it not as a tourist but as someone who lives there. Call it a "working vacation". See how you feel after the 30 days and talk to any retired folks you come across that are from the US.

All the books, all the reviews and all the suggestions cannot really help you decide.
Physically being there for a prolonged period can though.

One thing I did see on their site...to join their retired residents program you must have $2K/month in pension income minimum.

On HGTV, I see people shopping for houses in Central America.

I've often wondered how reliable the electric and water is there.
Sometimes HGTV will show a huge secluded house on a mountain.
Do those type houses use well water? How about the electric?

How easy is it to have something repaired ?

I retired on less than 2K/month right here in Texas.

Belize is so last year, like Panama, Ecuador, Uruguay, Thailand, Costa Rica and etc. If you want to get by on only US$500 per month, then beat the crowd and check out these stellar offerings:

Afghanistan (especially in the south)
North Korea (bring your girly sunglasses with)
Zimbabwe

Here's a link to the article:

How to Retire Comfortably for Under $1,500 a Month - Yahoo! Finance (http://finance.yahoo.com/news/How-to-Retire-Comfortably-for-usnews-2643852806.html?x=0 - broken link)

I've never really given any thought to moving to another country, but articles like this one make me think I should reconsider things.

The article starts with a description of a retired couple from Canada who are living comfortably on just the husband's Social Security check, while the wife's check goes into savings. Not bad.
