If you had to choose a place to retire that seemed like a pretty good "fit" in most ways (locale, weather, size, economy, etc.), but was otherwise predominantly either one "cultural extreme" or another…say, like either mostly "hippy", "yuppie", or else had a very high "redneck" quotient… which kinda place would you prefer?

For example, while "it takes all kinds", and everywhere has some sort of "mix", some places seem to 'lean' one way more than others, each with their 'downside'. Personally I tend to prefer more "rustic" values than somewhere with a high concentration of yuppies, although I don't much relate to redneck 'culture' either (Nascar, Harleys, tats, C/W music, etc.). But even as a "lib-rul", I also kinda get tired of too many 'earth mother', p.c., 'new-agey', hipper-than-thou folks too.

So if you had to choose your "annoyances", and all other things being equal, which kinda place would you find the easiest to, um "tolerate", and why?

I have to go with "yuppies". I grew up in the projects in Detroit, and made it my life's goal to better myself, therefore, I don't relate to "rednecks." And as a child of the '60's, and I mean a child, I was a teen in the early '70's, I didn't relate to the "hippies". And actually, seeing the '60's footage of the times and people as they were, I don't care for that time period. I did, however, learn about the Women's Movement during that time period and it shaped me during my formative years.

From a purely selfish aspect I would choose Yuppie - there would probably be a better class of clothes and furniture at the second hand stores and consignment shops.

Yuppies, but not because I gravitate toward them and not because I am one. It's that I relate to hippies and rednecks even less.

But I do know quite a bit about redneck culture. Do you know how to identify the bride at a redneck wedding? She's the one wearing the cleanest T-shirt. And do you know how rednecks define intellectuals? They're people who can read without moving their lips.

Great response! I don't care for the religious southern rednecks but love the western "slightly hippie-ish" cowboy kind of thing - C/W music and bluegrass or Texas swing, libertarian live and let live attitude, western towns, wide open skies and mountain views, dry air without a bunch of trees blocking my views, jeans and t shirts, shooting pool while drinking a Shiner Bock, etc. Tatooes (sp?) and motorcycles don't bother me either although I'm not a big fan.

Definitely not rednecks. I would choose yuppies. Jacked up pickups with a dog in the back ain't my style.

definitely hippies, I spent 10 years living amongst such people in Glastonbury in Somerset 8 miles from the festival site.

Intellectual Hippies. I do not care for Yuppie self-centered money and appearance crazed fools. I also do not care to try to have an interested conversation with Sports and Beer obsessed Rednecks.
