Today I asked my (adult) class about the OP's question and we did get a lot of discussion (and some laughs). Many wondered about the definitions and attempted some. Maybe a third of them could be considered "yuppies" but not really, because none of them are young or upwardly mobile (they are retired). The others are unclassifiable, imo.

I suppose that just as there are "old hippies", there can be old yuppies.

No wonder y'all are so "confused"… heck, do you even have any experience with any other kinda "cultural groups" there to begin with (not counting the "I"talians and Irish …lol)!
While I find most true hippies rather laughable and some even pathetic, I'm married to an original, 1960s hippie so I guess I would gravitate toward that population rather than the other choices. Kinda strange for a former combat veteran and state narcotics agent but thus far it's worked for almost two decades. Go figure!

It doesn't matter that the "y" stands for young. The meaning of "old yuppies" is clear. This hair-splitting is ridiculous. Are we supposed to lawyer up and write things like "former-yuppies-who-have-retained-the-attitudes-and-values-of-yuppies"?

Hippies are proud of their pretentions.
Yuppies are proud of their overt success.
Rednecks are proud of their trucks and gun.

What an astute summing up! If we posit a limitation of one short sentence to describe each group, I don't see how one could possibly do better than the above. Brilliant! Congratulations.
