Give me a break - it's not as if we are collectively writing a Ph.D. thesis here! Let's ditch the grim faces! I am so tempted to tell one more red neck joke, but that would start the whole grimness all over again.
Oh come on, tell it! Don't take things so seriously, even what you must continue to insist is moralistic. Any about yuppies or hippies?

One hippie came home and gave the dog fleas!

A hippie walked down the street wearing one shoe. A passerby asked, "Did you lose a shoe?" The hippie answered, "Nope, I found one!"

Why don't they use rectal thermometers in the redneck community? Too much danger of brain damage.

OK so I'm more of a hippie, seeing a "glass as half full."

Isn't there a fourth option? Or some way to meld the three together & pull the best traits while leaving behind the negative? I don't consider myself any one of those three, but I can appreciate a few characteristics from each.

This just makes me sick - no compassion - no brains - no conscience.
Wow. Horrifying. I don't even know what to say to that.

I can't speak for other areas of the country, but there is one huge "category" of people you left out in your OP. And that is what I call "regulars"—working class people of all incomes who do not subscribe to any particular lifestyle. They may be churchgoers but are not evangelistic. They work 40-hour weeks and may have raised families. They don't buy $5 lattés, do yoga and tai chi, drive trucks with guns in the back and drink beer by the sixpack, don't grow gardens or hug trees, aren't drug addicts. They are just middle of the road and lead responsible lives, rich or less rich (but they may "obsess over money" and have really nice things), with good to average values. They may have the prejudices (often do) but don't wear them on their sleeves. These are the majority of people I know "in the middle," and who knows how large a "category they make up nationwide. (this P contains a lot of stereotyping based on responses here)

I resist the simple categories because I see such blended values and lifestyles these days. Not every yuppie drives a Subaru or Volvo; not every hippie drives a VW bus. It's ridiculous to think that way.

How are these defined groups of folks going to impact your life, really, unless they live next door to you or are in your face? If you are retired, are you going to be hanging out with these folks, or mostly with your family and/or people like you whom you seek out after you move?

As I mentioned, I live in a liberal lifestyle area with a heavy influence from academia/environmentalism. I often get sick of the lifestyler culture around here that hangs out in coffee shops with their laptops and ipads, etc. I could easily name it a "me" kind of culture, but I know better than to make assumptions. And I like my fresh roasted coffee from a shop, too.

A biker band I know of raises a lot of money for charities. They're good "guys and gals" and they hang with their kind. Would I join them? No. Would I shun them? Not necessarily, unless they were directly making my life miserable in some way.

I have little resonance with the "typical" yuppie (if there is such a thing), however I do subscribe to wellness and organically grown foods, we have a garden, and we feel strongly about not wrecking the earth we live on and the air we breathe. It's just common sense. Nonetheless, I am in the broad working class category and I think many, many people are.
...........>snipped<........

I'd say I can relate to most of this. And darn it I lost the post, but someone previously used the term "adaptogen", which I like very much.

I still can't decide -- all things being considered in Mateo's OP -- which of those three I would choose. Seriously. I don't really have a problem with any of those groups. I visited TN several times at fairly decent stays each time when I first started researching an upcoming move. What I found was a complete bust up of stereotypes. Sure there were yuppies, hippies, rednecks, bible thumpers. But there were also hard core folks on the left & right that wouldn't necessarily fit into any particular category. Mostly I noticed a very obvious "live and let live" attitude.... which is exactly what I would like. Having been a disgusted & reluctant voter for over 30 years; with no party affiliation... the only group that truly drives me nuts are uninformed liberals who choose the left because it's what the cool, in crowd likes. They jump on a bandwagon & take on an air of superiority that is sorely misplaced. As tho anyone with an opposing view must automatically be an "uneducated red neck". Notice I said "uninformed"...plenty of lefties do know why they support what they do - and I respect that even if I might not agree. But that's the "cultural demographic" that would (and does) annoy me the most.

Really enjoying this thread & the varied responses. Life would be incredibly lackluster if we all agreed.
