My husband and I are golfers looking to relocate from the south to the western states. We spend our winters in the Phoenix area but are not interested in staying there year round. We would prefer to live on a golf course. Does anyone have any suggestions for an area with nice summers and affordable golf?

If it has to be the west coast then Oregon.

Why not Pebble Beach? There's an educated population, 30% of whom are retired. It's surprisingly inexpensive as well.

I lived in the Phoenix area for 4 years. It is warm in the winter...well, above freezing anyway. There are plenty of golf courses but IMO there are a lot of features lacking especially for those who are retired. Why not consider an area with a moderate climate where you could live year around? I am not a golfer but I did visit an absolutely wonderful community in Washington State just north of Portland. Lots of small houses and a golf course right through the middle of the neighborhood. There were lots of over 55 clubs and activities. Most residents were fairly young and still working so it had the feel of a place which attracts those who want an active lifestyle including outdoor activities. Washington has no income tax and Oregon has no sales tax.

I would not consider Oregon for golf because it is damp a good portion of the year (Medford might be the exception).

I would say Temecula or Northern San Diego County in California.

Top 100 Public Golf courses

2015-16 Ranking: America's 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses : Golf Digest

The top 20 include 4 from Oregon. Pebble beach has 2. Hawaii has 2. This is just the public ones.

Oh as JR mentions Washington, I spent almost 3 years in WA and the weather up in the great northwest is mild and during the winter it rains a good deal but that means the courses are easily maintained. Grass takes a lot of water.
