except for my daughters wedding last year in the Dominican republic which was a week , i have never taken more than a few days in 40 years so i have been to very few places.

i had to make my 2 or 3 week vacations last all year.
What if this is the new normal? That is a speculative discussion I have heard. Would you take a low return environment with little significant volatility and no real significant down turns?

For about $24K a year per person you can live on cruise ships.
Get off one boat and board the next.

3 10-night cruises a month.

Best vacation I ever had was a 7 day cruise to various Caribbean ports on Royal Caribbean.
Talk about pampered !!!

Many places you can go abroad/in this country where you can stay/eat like a king for cheap. Las Vegas, 5 diamond beautiful resorts can be had for great prices/value during specials with world class food choices everywhere. Don't gamble/gamble very little and I think you'll find the value is hard to beat compared to most anywhere in the world at that level of lodging. Plus being retired you'll be able to go on the off cycles during the weekdays to get these great prices.

Great. I hope you enjoy it as much as we do. Being about a 4 hour car drive away, we somehow find ourselves there every few weeks.

Best thing about being retired is you can go somewhere off season, off hours, off days.

The Texas coast is expensive in the summer for weekend trips but very cheap Mon-Thur.
And in off season you can rent a place for a month at the same cost of a weekend during the summer.

Exactly. One of our favorite times to travel is after labor day, mid-week, in the months of Sept-Oct. Crowds have disappeared, people are back in school, the weather is still good in most parts of the country and like you say, the rates are much better in most places.

If you can make it now on $17K per yr, you will have no problem living on next to nothing later....

Not really, I have no hedge against skyrocketing rents. My rent (for a ROOM) has soared over 60% in six years and currently after taxes and a student loan payment, rent consumes more than half of what's left.

I can easily see myself homeless before long.
