Very nasty post JRK. Trying to put someone down is wrong in any religion and in a life without religion. I guess that is your answer to what you have accomplished in your life.

I have, through God's power, had a wonderful marriage of 33 years and raised a smart beautiful daughter. I spend 10 years in community work as president of my civic association with several accomplishments like building a community garden, working to properly locate a senior housing project, saved 100's of trees during a highway construction project. I tried to use the best gift He gave me, my mechanical ability. I had a part in building many skyscrapers, an airline terminal, a power plant. I invented a device that can save lives and protect electrical equipment from unauthorized shutdowns.

I hope to do His will for the rest of my life.

Just one example: learning to fly private airplanes was a real achievement and a deep joy. That, and some other things, are so worthwhile to me as an individual that it doesn't much matter that they are fleeting and will be more or less meaningless after my death.
In the context of my original comment (do no harm and nothing substantively matters) all we are left with is strive to be happy in the time we have. That is a very personal thing: one size does not fit all. If flying planes makes you happy, wonderful!

In the words of Gandalf: “All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”

Well, actually in the words of J.R.R. Tolkien... but I get your point.

And by the by, reading LOTR is a wonderful way to spend some of the time we're given! And in Tolkien's case, and even better use of time to have written it.

Just don't attempt the Silly Marillion.

I am not trying to put anyone down. I make no distinction between anyone whose actions are based on faith or beliefs from organized religions or other groups. Sometimes I would agree with the outcome; sometimes not. Certainly it will take those we currently label as religious terrorists a great many centuries to reach the evils done in the name of Christianity. In any case this is a retirement forum. There is a separate forum for those who wish to express their religious beliefs and find likeminded individuals.

Actually have it; and, sadly in this instance, wasted (from my point of view) a little of my journey's time on it. Gladly, his other works more than compensated. If you want insight into the man, I highly suggest time spent with The Letters of JRR Tolkien.

The guy you originally responded to was answering the OP question. His last sentance mentioned he was becoming a Deacon. He was not off topic, you were. Peace, out.

I find it hard to boast of my accomplishments. For everything I've done right, there are many instances where, despite my best intentions, I dropped the ball. I have completed no spectacular feats, or gained recognition for any great deed. Only the people and animals whose lives I have touched can verify whether my life was well lived or wasted.

The good works I did do were done out of love, and in which I have already been repaid many times over. I have children and grandchildren who adore me, and I have received the love of so many animals I have had the honor of helping and rescuing throughout my life. I only hope that when my time comes to stand before God in judgement, he knows my heart and spirit were always willing, but human frailties sometimes prevailed.

Perhaps we need to look at the changes so many do not like and decide that what ever turn you on isn't a basis for a civil society. I really don't see a history of religious violence in this country at all but politically based by fringe groups at the time. It was state based and controlled religion that many including mine came to this country to get way from and fought against. Its the state based use of religion that is dangerous or the state itself ;really. One reading of constitution makes it clear its the state that it protects both religion and individuals from.
