One has nearly depleted an inheritance from a decade ago that was about a million dollars, another is systematically running down their inheritance and the third basically tosses her survivor pension and SS into the slots.
A casino is coming to the closest city to me, a city that has gone considerably downhill over the past few decades. It should be interesting to see whether it serves as revitalization or not. Generally speaking, the New England areas with the exception of Connecticut have resisted them.
The dumbest 1% of the population will ruin their lives, some larger fraction will divert money from other uses to donate to the casino, the out-of-town owner will drain money out, social services spending will go up, embezzlement and theft will rise, and most of the losers will claim they generally win.
When I go back east, on my return trip I schedule a couple hour layover at the Vegas Airport. I grab something to eat, walk around to stretch my legs and watch the people and play a few one armed bandits....a whopping 2-3 bucks...and I make sure they are the real ones where you have to pull the lever, because that's real fun.
We go 2 or 3 times a year to the local So Cal Indian casinos. Like the other poster mentioned, it is more of a getaway for work, I might gamble $500-800 in 2 days. I do more walking around, going to the gym/spa and visiting the buffet. It all depends on your income/monthly expenses and whether you feel comfortable gambling with you money.
I view it as a form of entertainment. Never feel compelled to engage in an activity to make someone else happy.

I'm surprised to hear there's a lot more to do at casinos. I thought it was all gambling. She is a daylong gambler and I was worried I'd be stuck by her side.

You have to check first -- not every casino has entertainment options....
You'll probably lose money no matter what you do if they have extras. I don't think the extras are free. But if you go at least once then you can tell her you tried it and didn't care for it. Then maybe she'll leave you alone. My friend doesn't even nag me anymore about going.
He, in turn, has to have his brother handle his money. His paycheck goes to his brother in NJ and the brother pays his bills for him. That's pretty sad.

Maybe there's an outdoor pool? (water) I could hang out there till she's done.
I think actually that I'd rather do blackjack than slot machines. I hated the video malls where I had to pick up my kids when they were teens. Something about machines. I'm reading online "11 Blackjack Tips the Casinos Don't Want You to Know." Keep your game face, etc. At least there's some acquired skill involved.
