I just know that Dayton gets more sun, shorter winters and less snow than where I'm from in southern MI 4 hours north. However winter is more than just a couple of months with a pretty inch right at Christmas.

My sister thinks that for every hour south you gain a week in how early spring arrives. I guess that would only apply east of the Mississippi and is a generalization for sure.

I think that is a pretty accurate statement. There are some +/- in that but not much in real terms.

It is an interesting way to think about it. It is about a 10 hour drive for me to where there pretty much is no winter; 7 or 8 to where it will probably not be cold but might be in Jan/Feb.

I think that's too much. Over the past 25 years I have moved from Philadelphia to DE to Maryland to DC to NC (so straight down I-95 practically ). I am currently 71/2 hours from where I grew up. There is no way that spring in the Raleigh/Durham area starts 7 1/2 weeks earlier than Philadelphia. I am currently 4 1/2 hours from DC. Spring does not start a month earlier here than in DC. I'd say it's more like for every 2 hours you drive south, you get spring a week earlier, which would put Raleigh's spring about 2 weeks ahead of DC's spring, about 3 1/2 weeks or so ahead of Philly's spring, 4 1/2 weeks ahead of NYC's spring, and about 5-6 weeks ahead of Boston's spring. That sounds a bit more accurate to me.

OP, just throwing a couple more ideas out there. How about Roanoke, Virginia or Staunton, Virginia (not far from Charlottesville for good medical care).
