I've thought about doing some guest lectures at the local university when I retire. I've always done some of that in my corporate life where I'd do lunchtime seminars for the engineers. I have lots of PowerPoint decks I've created over the years and it wouldn't take much to put an hour or two lecture together for some engineering grad students. I don't care about the money but it would be some useful intellectual stimulation.
I was asked to return to work *specifically* to help a new generation of employees learn to write clearly and concisely about complex technical matters. They are smart and understand technology better than I do, but express themselves poorly in writing. The main issue seems to be that they've never had to consider how easy it is for strangers to misinterpret their wording. You'd think they'd never heard of the Internet ;-)
Amazingly, they want to learn what I have to teach them. Just the other day, a young man half my age told me, "You know, you are a big help. I hope you know that."
Absolutely! Retirement is the perfect opportunity to put that passion to make the world a better place into action. What I envision for the future is so HUGE, I am well aware that when I die, what I am working on will still be in the embryonic stage.
A young Autistic woman who is helping with this, recently said to me. "Don't worry J,V. I know that someday, when this has grown fully into your dream, people are going to want to make upI a big plaque or something for you. I respect your humility and will not allow it."
I turned to her and said "Don't be denying my old dead bones a plaque."
You certainly don't have to do that, so you're off the hook. This Thanksgiving, I taught my son how to make pastry and we made an apple pie. Now, he can make pie for everyone else. He doesn't have to, but he can.
