BTW, I had to laugh where the original article claimed that a potential flaw in the plan is that there is no employer to provide a company match. That is so funny. Don't people realize that the 401K employer match is in lieu of salary? The employer match is there for the taking if your employer offers it, and if someone doesn't take it, it is just more profit for the employer. The 'match' is only available if you work for it, so how could myRA ever create money to be just given away?

Ah but the seed has been planted that IRAs should also have an employer match when that IRA is managed by the state/fed and you have payroll deductions.
Now we just watch and wait as that seed gets watered and grows in MSM articles.
Looks like Ms.Ghilarducci has been busy implementing her grand idea in the years since she spoke to Congress.

You are so very on target and you know this is all a coordinated effort to change how we do business and depending on the election...........
Generally the places that don't offer retirement plans are low wage employers primarily employing low wage workers. Even if the plans were offered, the average worker wouldn't have enough to save. The problem is the people just earn too little.

Not necessarily. Americans have always been bad savers compared to other countries where workers earn even less.
We are a nation of spenders, not savers.
That's another "seed" that has been planted in people's minds..that Americans don't have money to save.
Yet consumer debt is at an all time high. Americans are buying new cars with loans at a record pace and using that credit card more freely.
You'll get no argument from me about the spending portion, but in my hometown, the MEDIAN household income is barely $30k. The lower half of that are basically an underclass and don't make enough to save anything significant.

Well if an individual earns too little then he/she needs to come up with a plan for earning more. Difficult to achieve? Yes, perhaps. But almost always the individual who wants this is more likely to achieve it than the individual who just thinks the exact same job he is doing should pay him more money. Ain't a gonna happen.

But the math just does not work. There are not enough better jobs to go around. Some require more education and the money isn't there for that either. Yes, there will be some success stories but taking the dog eat dog world and making the dogs that win heroes in a fairy tale doesn't make it the ideal way to help those in need IMO.

You are both correct!
