I have three sons and they were mesmerized, along with all their friends, over the original saga (you have to see SW on the giant theater screen, not at home). All they begged for were the toy figures. We had them all, quite a fortune, lol.
There is no place in modern American culture for mythology. Works like Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, etc brought some mythological aspects to youth (and adults).
The ideas of the forces of good and evil, awaken the force within, father-son, son combatting the sins of the father, corrupt vs benevolent regimes, etc are played out in easily identified figures, and there was "justice" to it, unlike the senseless violent movies today that lack that archetypal dimension. The archetype of Star Wars has parallels in other works seldom accessed in the popular entertainment world.
And Star Wars was character-driven, something kids could relate to. Superman, kind of. But that story pales in comparison to Star Wars and its rich lineup of human and invented characters and psychodrama. Luke and Yoda were favorites. It was the same era as "ET," which introduced a sense of the positive supernatural to youth.
I meant to warn you: people who are gaga over "Starwars" get very hostile when you question why.
Our local theaters opened the new SW with kids attending in character dress. The newspaper ran a feature with photos of excited little Lukes and Leias, and of course Darth Vader.
Your opinion, just that and nothing more. Strange that someone who proclaimed "not getting it" would start a thread about it to the point of belittling someone with a different take on it.
As for me, saw the original in a theater and enjoyed it. For some reason never did see the rest of the "trilogy." Will have to do so one of these days.
Anybody else not getting this Star-wars nonsense?
I remember 30+ years ago walking out to the theater lobby to take a break from the stuff on the screen.
I'd much rather watch a rerun of The Shawshank Redemption.
Or my all time favorite, "The Godfather series".

The truth is that all three movies are epics ingrained in the culture of earlier lives and for different people and different reasons they remain part of us. Star Wars for many geezers gives us chance to explore anew a previous classic
I fell asleep about 10 minutes into the first one in 1977. Haven't been back since. I still don't get the whole thing. Obviously a lot of people feel differently.
I stood in line for all three of the first. I've sort of memorized the favorite scenes. I have seen all of them at least twice in a theater, and have the dvd's. The last one, when Anakin becomes Darth Vader, I really really liked.
I WANT a light saber to hang on my wall..... I'll put it next the phaser.
I figure when stuff gets less rushed, I'll talk with my nephew about going to see the new one on the big screen (local theater is puny). But I really look forward to it. I will wear my psudo starfleet uniform too, at least the one that doubles as a jacket. But miss it? Nooooooo...oooooooooooohhhhhhhh way.

Like I said it's just a movie to me. Can't understand why somebody would be upset if the movie did not mean much to me.
I guess if I said I didn't like football or baseball somebody would be pissed off that I don't like their sport.
If you think I belittled somebody for not liking their movie than I apologize for not realizing that some people are so thin skinned.
I saw Star Wars in the theater when I was 10. I went with my friend's family. That's all I remember. Did not see the sequels and prequels and don't care to. Let me know when Titanic's 20 year anniversary is here.
